Mason Marchment to the Dallas Stars

Marchment, 27, had played a total of 37 NHL games going into last season. Then he erupted with 47 points (18 G, 29 A) in 54 games in 2021-22, showing that he could fill a strong supporting role on a good team.  Not only did he show offensive touch last season, but Marchment had outstanding possession numbers, with the Panthers controlling 61.7% of 5-on-5 score-and-venue-adjusted shot attempts and 63.4% of expected goals during 5v5 play with Marchment on the ice, per Natural Stat Trick.

A 6-foot-4 winger, Marchment brings a physical element to the game, putting up 114 hits in 54 games last season. Combine that with his ability to contribute offensively and drive play, it makes a lot of sense for the Stars to bring in this relative late bloomer.

Because he has such a limited NHL track record, Marchment comes at something of a discount price. There is a calculated risk to this signing, but it seems like a sensible move for the Stars, a team that desperately needs improved production from their second and third lines.

Dallas is still likely to be battling for a playoff spot next season. Their Stanley Cup odds are priced at +4500 on DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook, and +4000 on Caesars Sportsbook.

Signing Grade: A
