Report Card: Assessing Claude Giroux to the Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators have been active this offseason, making a concerted effort to improve the club offensively. First, they traded for Alex DeBrincat and now the Senators have opened free agency by signing Claude Giroux to a three-year, $19.5 million contract.

Claude Giroux to the Ottawa Senators

Giroux, 34, played his entire career with the Philadelphia Flyers before getting traded to the Florida Panthers at the deadline last season. He has played more on the wing in recent seasons but is still capable of winning draws, nearly 60% over the past three seasons.

A hugely productive player, Giroux’s production has naturally declined as he heads towards his mid-30s, but he still has 161 points in 198 games across the past three seasons, including 23 points in 18 games for the Panthers down the stretch last season.

What Giroux offers to the Sens is a more experienced and proven performer. While Ottawa has an exciting group of young forwards, Giroux is more battle-tested. He has appeared in 95 playoff games, producing 81 points, which goes along with 922 points in 1018 games.

The Senators appear to be making a big push for next season, adding DeBrincat and Giroux at no cost to their current roster, so they should be among the playoff contenders in the Eastern Conference.

The Senators still offer plenty of value on the Stanley Cup markets, priced at +5500 on DraftKings Sportsbook, +6500 on FanDuel Sportsbook, and +8000 on Caesars Sportsbook.
