BetMGM Trends: Money follows Tiger Woods at the Masters

The big story at the 2022 Masters is a player who has not played a round of competitive golf since the 2020 Masters Tournament.
Tiger Woods announced this week that he would play in this year’s tournament and, befitting his place in the history of the sport, interest immediately followed Tiger.
At BetMGM, Woods is named on 11.5% of tickets, for 14.0% of the handle, both tops on the field. Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas are both on 6.0% of the Masters tickets, bringing in 8.9% and 7.5% of the handle, respectively.

Woods is a five-time Masters champion, most recently in 2019, and indicated this week that he feels like he can win in his return to competitive golf.

It did not take much from Tiger to get support from the wagering community. There is a $2,000 bet on Tiger, priced at +5000 on BetMGM, to win the Masters. That would bring a $100,000 payout. Woods also pays +115 to make the cut at Augusta National this weekend.

If handle relative to number of tickets can serve as a proxy for where the sharp money is in this tournament, beyond Woods, Koepka, and Thomas, there is some interest in Cameron Smith, who is on 4.9% of the tickets for 5.7% of the handle, and Collin Morikawa, named on 4.1% of the wagers to win for 4.8% of the handle, at BetMGM.
