Who dey think going to beat them Bengals? The Washington Redskins? Maybe. I love Robert Griffin III, but apparently not as much as linesmakers and the public love him. Despite coming off a road loss to a team that won just two games last season, having a rookie quarterback making his third career start and losing two of its best defensive starters - Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker - to season-ending injuries, Washington is laying more than a field goal at home to a team that made the playoffs last season. Read that sentence again. While it's certainly no lock that Cincinnati keeps this within a field goal (or wins it) to cover (it is probably something close to 57.8% likely to happen), it is not easy to rationalize this line.

The Cincinnati Bengals out-performed their abilities to make it to the NFL Playoffs last season, but that does not mean that, with just about everyone of significance returning this year, they are bad team. In our strength-of-schedule-adjusted NFL Power Rankings, Cincinnati comes in 19th, just four spots behind Washington. More importantly to covering as an underdog, the Bengals do not have any obvious, exploitable weaknesses. They may not rank in the top ten in any category, but there also is not any one area where Washington has a major advantage over the visitors.

Ultimately, that's about all that needs to be said for this non-descript game. More eyeballs than previous games featuring either team will likely be watching the game because of the new quarterback making his home debut. When it is all said and done though, this is a coin flip game between two average NFL teams. In our most likely boxscore, Griffin ranks as our third-best fantasy quarterback for the week with 254 yards passing, 1.7 TDs and 0.9 interceptions to go with 49 yards rushing on 9 carries. However, Andy Dalton of the Bengals throws for more yards (278) and the Bengals come within four total yards on average of Washington (385 to 389).
According to 50,000 simulations by the Predictalator, Washington wins at home over Cincinnati 51.4% of the time and by an average score of 26.5-26.2. As 3.5 underdogs in what is essentially a 50/50 game, the Bengals cover the spread 57.3% of the time, which qualifies as a normal play and warrants a $52 play from a normal $50 player. There are six stronger plays on the week in the NFL. It's a bit of a shootout with over 50 points scored and the OVER 49 covers just enough to be considered a "half-bet" play.
