Exactly, there's inevitably a reverting to the mean situation with that stuff, especially in the NFL.

In fact you, you could handicap an edge IN THE NFL just on the regression to the mean of turnovers given up between the first half and second half of the season.

That edge got out and dried up. It's always the simple ones that get out and dry up.

First, there is no D like you say...lol...and second unless he's some brilliant on the fly play caller, which is doubtful given the D situation, I would think the system would be at play.

I don't really know though, but I would be across the league that it's not as important as it sounds.

Maybe even less so in the NFL, but it also might just outright depend on the program and team, which ultimately should be depending on the head coach.

For example, Bama missing a guy in the booth might not matter as much as some smaller school with less of a system in place might. Hard to do an NFL comparison, they should all be systems.

As far as shortcomings I really am not sure the cause. Maybe the computer learning just over adjusts or tries to do to much. If it did, would it know it?

I think those approaches are akin to just finding different ways to handicap. Some will run hot, some will run cold, and often at different times.

When a machine "learns" it all and applies it, it likely just get's back to 50-50.

Just some thoughts there.

overfitting a challenge always. maybe the modelling could act as a filter to other market functions, or the market functions could act as a filter to the modelling. If you look at Linkedin and Job descriptions you can gain insights into the ML tech stack the books are using and hiring for.

if you are already building regression based forecasts, i don't see why you wouldn't want to use regression based ML algos and other tools from the ML world to sharpen the forecasts if you have the skills and education. for every 1 person doing it right, there's many doing it wrong you have to think.

maybe if you creatively frame the ML problem to solve beyond the typical sports outcome forecasting continuous variables and incorporate unique market data and output variables, you can find more value in ML than the typical person.

if many different industries are finding value in ML, you have to think that it can be bring value to your business if you have the capabilities.
