Feds Want To Close The Ocean
Just before the weekend, the National Park Service informed charter boat captains in Florida that the Florida Bay was "closed" due to the shutdown. Until government funding is restored, the fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open ocean. Fishing is also prohibited at Biscayne National Park during the shutdown.

The Park Service will also have rangers on duty to police the ban. Of access to an ocean. The government will probably use more personnel and spend more resources to attempt to close the ocean, than it would in its normal course of business.

This is governing by temper-tantrum. It is on par with the government's ham-fisted attempts to close the DC WWII Memorial, an open-air public monument that is normally accessible 24 hours a day. By accessible I mean, you walk up to it. When you have finished reflecting, you then walk away from it.

At least that Memorial is an actual structure, with some kind of perimeter that can be fenced off. Florida Bay is the ocean. How, pray tell, do you "close" 1,100 square miles of ocean? Why would one even need to do so?

Oh, they have also shut off all sports on the Armed Forces Network to our troops, but they are allowing them to keep NPR. Unreal.

They are also putting cones along the highways by Mount Rushmore to keep people from parking on the side of the road and taking pictures. I thought there were anti-bullying campaigns going on. The feds sure haven't been watching them.

Zion's national park a huge tourism attraction for many foreigners has been shut down and all tourists camping or staying at the park were told to leave the night of the shutdown. Mind you many of these tourist have flown across half the world to see this once in a lifetime opportunity and now cannot even day hike or get out of thier vehicle inside the park. Park rangers who are not getting paid have been instructed to write tickets to anyone who stops inside the park while the road remains open to cross traffic. The business owners in the immediate area of Zion's rely on tourism to pump millions of dollars into our local economy. They are the ones suffering here. Many government workers I have personally spoke to have already filed for unemployment and I they get back pay will have to pay back any unemployment income but they are not holding thier breath.
