I grew up about 15 mins south of the Meadowlands, I was a NYR fan before the Devils moved here, but I was like 8 or 9 when Schultz was wreaking havoc.
Now I wish the Rangers well, if it doesn't affect the Devils, but now, as an adult, I can take or leave the Rangers.

The sport's really not that popular today. It's actually never really been popular. I'm talking strictly in the US obv. When the Flyers had the Broad Street Bullies and they made the Russians quit in that one game and they won a couple cups in the 70's, sure they had a following for those years. But it didn't carry over into the 80's. The 80's popularity was primarily Gretzky, Messier, and the Oilers dominating, some of it Lemieux doing amazing things on the ice.

Flyers were the 1st expansion team to win a cup, places like vancouver and LA were averaging 8-9000 fans a night in the 70s and would sell out when the bullies came to town. Flyers got the ball roling in the 70s and played in multiple cups in the 80s as well and kept the ball rolling. I know the sport is not as popular as other major sports overall but if not for the bullies teams in the 70s the sport would be no where near as popular as it is today. Saying the flyers didnt save hockey is completely false.

The historic fact of the "broad street bullies" is they were built that way because St Louis beat the crap out of them the 1st 2 seasons they faced in the playoffs. Snider swore his team wouldnt be pushed around so he built a strong physical team.
