#38Looking for a clear cut plan / chart to follow when working out. . . i know the basics, but i want to know when to change it up, and how , because people tell me you have to "shock your muscles" by switching your routine every know and then. . .also need to know what i can do starting off, cuz i know you can't push it right off the bat. . .
Here is what im considering
3 sets of 10 w/ a fourth burn out set
for cardio i was thinking the oliptical
Mon = back / biceps . . .
hammer curls
Standing straight bar curls
standing dumbell curls
back extenstions
sitting rows
lat pull downs
15 min cardio
Tues = Cardio / ABS
3 ab exercises.
30 min cardio
Wed = chest / triceps
flat bench (straight bar)
flat bench (dumbell)
flys
tri pulldowns (rope / bar)
behind the head dumbell (don't know the name)
another tri exercise
15 min cardio
Thurs = cardio/ ABS
3 ab exercises
30 min cardio
Fri = legs/shoulders
leg press
Calf raises
leg extensions
shrugs
dumbbell lifts(don't know the name) forward/side
military bench
15 min cardio
thoughts?
Need a schedule for the first couple weeks , obv they shouldnt be this much . . .Comment -

I don't mean to be negative but I think it's more "constructive" to point out what I believe may not be efficient in the above suggestion from my personal experience...
I would suggest doing more sets, less reps, more weight, and less exercises...
For your power lifts 5-7 sets of 5-7 reps. First set 7 reps. to warm up... Second set just enough weight to do 5 reps. 3-5th set add just enough weight to do three reps... maybe a last set to max out one rep...
I do like the idea of being there each day as it keeps your mind in a rythem..to be consistant...
15 min. of cardio. does not do much but it is better then nothing...
I am a believer in techinque and I suggest doing curls on your knees with elbows tight against your side... Keep your back straight and this will help you not use your legs and back to cheat... When you bench lift your legs up in a curled up position as if you are doing crunches as I feel this completely isolates your upper body... It's A LOT harder but I feel it's better because balance is important here...
To start with I would do 3 sets and 5 reps. of everything you have above with "fairly" light weight focusing on form and getting your body familiar with what you are about to put it through!

#40Seems like a decent workout u have there. By diet, i mean you should eat 5-6 meals a day. I used to eat 3 big meals and that was it. But that slows down your metabolism. I just recently switched to 5-6 after doing research and finding out the correct way to eat. Your last meal should be 3 hours before you go to bed also. If u eat close to bed time, then your body will store the food as fat.
Much like "crazy" said: once you get to where you want to be you can eat more of what you want... Well that is because his metabolism will have increased... I believe metabolism increases after about 6 months of consistantly working out... I do not think eating has much to do with it...
When I was working out consistantly every day and doing sprints I also drank all summer at night (6-8 beers) and hung out at BW's where the college girls were eating wings (honey BBQ) and their other sh*t and didn't gain much weight... This was in 96' where I was really really lean and strong but I could not put on weight for sh*t...
It's hard for me to gain weight and I use to eat HUGE plates of PASTA before I went to bed as many nights in a row as I can and it didn't do much... For me to gain weight was a success in 99' because I realized I had to eat before I was hungry ALL THE TIME... I would eat..get high..eat..get high..work out ...eat ...get high...etc.. It worked but it took that to do it... I got strong even stronger benching 270 with my legs in the air but as my aunt said I looked very "POOFFY"...
By the way if most don't know...when you get high it relaxes your stomach muscles and I could eat without feeling stuffed...
You may have to go a bit extreme to get where you want to be as I had to do but once you are there it's not hard to maintain... I had to go up..you have to go down but not far down...

isn't a workout with less reps and maxing out designed to build mass, which would be nice, but I want to get toned more importantly. . .Comment -

BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU... to truly build real LEAN muscle I don't care how much you max out you will only build so much so fast of true lean muscle... I would say 99.99999% of the people get the "appearence" of lean muscle and actual lean muscle confused... If you lift really heavy you just force your body to maximize efficiency...

#43You'd probably burn more calories by masturbating for a half hr than doing a mere 15 minutes of cardio. For real, if you're going to do it, make sure you do it right. It's counter productive to not get enough cardio in.
I'd start out walking if I were you. Walk a mile, then two for a couple days, get loose. All the while still doing crunches and stuff like that. There are different ways to approach it but you need to develop a routine, you want to work up to being able to run a few miles each day. Riding a bike too, anything.
I know maybe some of those cheesy 1980 workout videos that caught on may be titled "15 minutes of cardio" or whatnot, but you should definitely exceed that in your daily exercises. 15 minutes a day would be an utter waste.Comment -

#44With all due respect I believe this to be totally untrue as well.... Metabolism is how efficient your body coverts food into energy I believe and your body is more efficient after a consistant streak of working out...

Stabilized blood sugar prevents the hypoglycemia that occurs when one eats a huge meal and feels tired and lethargic soon afterward, due to low glucose levels to the brain. The body is more likely to store fat when in a hypoglycemic state, due to a spike in insulin levels.

You should be doing some form of cardio 6x a week, rest on Sunday, that's "God's" day. I would be doing all the cardio mentioned in this thread that you can handle MTWTFS, lifting every other day, and working your leg muscles on the odd days off..Comment -

#47i read through some of this, the key to working out is not to get into too many routines. the time you set for workouts can obviously remain the same, but change your work outs. your body adjusts to your workouts whether its cardio or weight lifting. you want to surprise your body and change your routines.
basics:
eat breakfast
lay off of sugars excpet for right after your work out
eat good fats
eat good carbs
eat 5-6 times a day, small meals.
with cardio do bursts/sprints
change your routines upComment -

#48personally, i lift decently, but i dont do a lot of cardio yet. i'll add that soon enough, my basic goals were for a 370 bench/5:30 mile
if i can reach those goals, most of it should fall into place. the lifting hasnt been hard to reach and its actually enjoyable, but the cardio is a bitch.Comment -

#49Eating smaller servings, on a frequent basis, serves to keep the metabolic rate constantly heightened, and helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. A constantly stimulated metabolism means fat-burning over a longer period.

Trust me dude I stuffed myself for months eating HEAVY carbs (pasta and mega mass 4000((gross)) before bedtime and my metabolism was through the roof... As I said it wasn't just before bedtime it was CONSTANTLY... I think it was because I worked out 5 hours a day 7 days a week and when I didn't work out I was either eating or goiing to the fridge every 10 minutes to take a swig of that disgusting shake!

#50It's hard to get up for cardio. You really need to just force yourself to get up and do it. I take my ipod with me every day, it helps so much having something to listen to. Even bought a strap to hold it onto my arm for when I'm weight lifting.Comment -

#53My workout routine usually consists of cardio 5-6 days a week with usually 3-4 times of weight machines like chest exercises and arms, and usually abs as well 3-4 times a week
Also try to avoid eating after 8 at night if you can, and just drink water then on.
Subway has alot of nice subs as long as you read the nutritional information and watch the amount of food your eating.
Goodluck on whatever you do!Comment -

#55Also don't put too much emphasis on protein, carbs, and fat... Amino Acids (broken down protein) and your vitaimins and minerals are just as if not more important...
MoFo if you did sprints you would like it because it is over with so quickly... Starting out you are only there a few minutes and even once you do a lot of them you're still only there about 10-15 minutes doing a lot more work then long distance running... Sprinting will give you more size then long distance running...
I can write you up a starter chart if you want...but it's not as good unless I was there to make sure you did things correctly...
I am not a certified trainer guys no doubt about that but that's because I don't want to be certified.. I trained indivual males and females as well as a whole football team before...
Which sucker... I mean coach do you think got stuck opening, running, and closing the weight room during the off season..???

im only 5-10, im not real big. yeah i got up to 375, but i couldnt do that today. yesterday i did 315 7 times and got spotted through my 8th...but im not sure what direction i want to go. i kinda wanted to reach 400 just to say i got to 400, but thats pointless. i want to weigh about 205, but right now im around 217.
soon i'll be off the bench all together, but our dumbells only go up to 130 and the 130s in my gym are shaky. the 120s arent heavy enough to lift for low reps, i got 120s 10 times on the incline, id prefer to be able to do something 5-7 times on my heavy set.
useless lifting really, i should do more squats, i just hate them.Comment -

#58That is good advice, I cannot stand Subway lately though. They make them too thin and it's like.. too processed of a sandwich. I go down to this Chinese deli like 30 minutes away and get a huge hero made on Italian bread, guy stacks his sandwiches like fkn houses... always a line out the door. Borderline crappy area but worth it.
See that is the thing, until I get out of FL subway is one place that has really healthy foods or at least tries too. Another place down here is crispers pretty good and not sure if you guys have Panera bread they are nice too, so many hotties in there and good food some say pricey but its worth it.
I bet you dont have any problems finding good places up in NY crazy, that is what I love about up there all the unique places to try outComment -

Squats are good and I sometimes really like them but kickers would I guess... I think it's amino acids your quads release during squats but that was a nice four bowls in the last hour so it can be battery acid for all I know...
Hey MoFo I don't know if it's just me or not but it doesn't seem the same unless you are on a football field or track marked... I like running down the numbers and that I know exactly where I start and where I will end too... Maybe it's atmosphere of the glass bowl or the HS stadium but I have to have a football field to sprint on... Get back to me and tell me what you think...

i agree, i have to run by a field, it takes me back to the days where i played sports and i just feel like an athlete being on the track or the field. i used to do work with cones and change of direction stuff, but not in years. i love running on a lined football field...the lines pass more quickly and you feel like you're movin even if you're not really going as quickly as you'd like. i used to be one of the better sprinters at my hs and at each college i went to, but i really havent run in years...maybe 3 years since ive run a decent amount. pathetic.Comment -

I don't need huge biceps I can carry my own haha

#64well when I signed up I had a personal trainer at first. they offered like 3 free sessions and did that then I paid for hour long ones for a bit few months then guy left. But I learned alot, he always got on me because I wouldnt eat breakfast and he really stressed to do that, have a nice lunch, chicken and vegetables etc and maybe snack dinner.
right now, I am in process of moving, deciding where to move and just have part time job so my schedule varies but I usually still dont eat breakfast - I know its bad but I usually will get like Subway or I go to Panera or another place get like a sandwich and chips.
I know they advertise like crazy about 6 inch subs but I get hungry I need to have full sub, and whenever I do that I just tell myself to spend an hour on cardio where I normally burn 900-1000 calories, then do some chest exercises, I like the weight resistant machines instead of free weights, and then do some abs work.
It's worked out for me so far, although need to talk to one of trainers and get more tips on improving chest but that is what I do in addition try not to eat after 8- although 2 weeks holiday traveling I slipped everyday on that one, and just try to drink more water. Never big into it always loved gatorade and still drink that, but force myself to have a glass or 2 of water each day.Comment -

HAHA you're right you do feel like you are flying down that field and the lines fly past you one after the other... I love the goal line to goal line deal... Once in a blue moon I like to throw the chance of direction in to help with that first step...
Well if you did sprints in HS I bet you were ripped... IMO no other cardio needed if you are doing sprints all the time... Talk about an endorphin rush after sprints ..ehy MoFo ???

for soccer we used to do 17/34s...120 yards we had to get down in 17 seconds, back in 24, and do that 14 times. it doesnt sound terribly hard, but it was a pain in the ass at the end of practice. that was when i played d-1 at mt st marys.
in hs i was pretty small, i was about 5-10 but maybe 150lbs of mouth. i couldnt play football or lacross because i only have 1 kidney, so i played soccer and club baseball/basketball.
the atmosphere is almost everything for me....give me some music in my ipod, and put me on the field and something just feels right. i hate not being able to compete in anything serious anymore and thats why i dont really get out to the track often. you cant talk shtt in some mens league with old farts....the games just dont mean anything once you reach a certain age and that actually bothers me. i miss it.

yeah I loved competing as well in sports used to do soccer and basketball haha did some indoor soccer in college that was fun stuff. I was thinking about checking into like adult sport leagues, well something for like 20-35 year olds dont need to compete with grandpa's. where are you at mofo?
funny you mentioned about ipod, dont have one of those, but love to just get to gym and watch espn or a basketball game at the gym gets me pumped up, especially when you have money on itComment -

haha i actually hate watching games in the gym, i get so fukking mad when i lose and i dont control it well in public. i know all the people at the gym and im friends with the manager and trainers, so no one bothers me, but man...i just dont handle it well. i pretty much have to watch games by myself when i have money on them.
i live in maryland right now...im 27 so im too old for leagues that matter. i would love to have something competitive, but i dont see much out there. ive looked at some mens soccer leagues, but its pretty lame. i played some indoor in hs and in college and loved it. its a more physical game and there is a lot more talking and shtt like that, i enjoyed telling people that they were awful. my favorite thing used to be playing outdoors, in the cold, and making fun of the kids wearing long sleeves. i was never short on words.

Well then SPRINTS will be more enjoyable in more ways then one for you in this case... It may not mean as much but you can still live in your own world for the time you are there to get a little motivation but yeah I can see what you mean by the games not meaning as much...
I'm like that "Blanch" chick from that one show that doesn't tell her age... I am younger then Chuck Webb and about Jimmy Jackson's age...HA!
Sh*t I lie about my age so much I forget sometimes... My x girlfriend didn't know how old I was for a couple years until my big mouth sister opened her mouth one day!!

#70haha i actually hate watching games in the gym, i get so fukking mad when i lose and i dont control it well in public. i know all the people at the gym and im friends with the manager and trainers, so no one bothers me, but man...i just dont handle it well. i pretty much have to watch games by myself when i have money on them.
i live in maryland right now...im 27 so im too old for leagues that matter. i would love to have something competitive, but i dont see much out there. ive looked at some mens soccer leagues, but its pretty lame. i played some indoor in hs and in college and loved it. its a more physical game and there is a lot more talking and shtt like that, i enjoyed telling people that they were awful. my favorite thing used to be playing outdoors, in the cold, and making fun of the kids wearing long sleeves. i was never short on words.
