NFL Player News - Super Bowl Week

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

LAR - PK Greg Zuerlein expects to play

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Rams PK Greg Zuerlein (foot) said he should be good to go after a few more days of treatment on his injured left foot. 'It hurt, but not enough to stop me from playing,' Zuerlein said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zuerlein will play but the confidence in him to hit 50+ yard field goals with the game on the line might be shaken in Sean McVay if he struggles on early extra point and shorter attempts. This could be one of the stories of the game.

NYG - NYG may consider WR Chris Hogan

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New England Patriots impending free-agent WR Chris Hogan could be an option for the New York Giants in free agency, in the opinion of SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hogan could also be an option for the Dolphins if they hire Brian Flores and he brings along Chad O'Shea to coordinate the offense. He has made more contributions recent and should generate some interest on a short deal.

OAK - TE Jared Cook posts 71 yards

    Source: ESPN.com

Oakland Raiders TE Jared Cook caught three passes for 71 yards against the NFC in the 2019 Pro Bowl.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook made a great statement going into free agency. He might have been underpaid at five million last year with the desire for his skillset to create mismatches in the passing game. He'll likely be a TE1 heading into next year no matter where he lands, but could hit the jackpot for fantasy if he ends up somewhere like New Orleans or on a Gronk-less Patriots team.

NE - QB Tom Brady says he's not retiring

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said Sunday, Jan. 27, there's 'zero' chance Super Bowl LIII will be his last game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some may want to see no more of Brady if he wins yet another Super Bowl, but it doesn't sound like he's going to satisfy them.

WAS - QB Alex Smith not in 2019 plans?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (leg) is tentatively not in the team's 2019 plans as the general feeling in the organization is that he'll miss the season with complications resulting from broken leg this past fall, sources said Sunday, Jan. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith's leg had a huge apparatus on it when he was recently seen in public, lending credence to this report. The team could attempt to move up in the draft for a long term answer, but should also pursue a free agent like Teddy Bridgewater to start Week 1.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown could still remain a Steeler

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown remains the subject of exploratory trade talks by the team, but Brown hasn't closed the door entirely on returning and has 'maintained a steady dialogue' with some he's close to in the Steelers organization to further that cause.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The combine is going to be a key time for the future of this situation as that's when a lot of NFL decision makers get to interact face to face. The chances of Brown staying are higher than they seemed at the beginning of the offseason, but probably still below 50/50.

NYG - QB Eli Manning could help groom successor

Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is likely to return for another season and help groom his successor, likely a high-round rookie draft pick.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants started prepping us for the return of Eli with many reports that he could stick around. They may not draft a quarterback at six, which is more ammo for the keep Eli movement, even though it would doom the team to another mediocre season.

BAL - WR John Brown wants more deep shots

Source: The Athletic - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens WR John Brown remains open to re-signing with Baltimore, but he said he would like to be in an offense that takes more shots downfield.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown could also rejoin Bruce Arians in Tampa Bay in a move that makes a lot of sense if Desean Jackson is gone. Really Brown could fit in any offense, and teams like the Colts and Raiders could also make a run at him.

PHI - RB Corey Clement to miss time in 2019?

    Source: CSNPhilly.com - Andrew Kulp

Philadelphia Eagles RB Corey Clement (knee) still hasn't revealed the exact nature of his knee injury, but Andrew Kulp of CSNPhilly.com believes the injury could force him to miss the start of the 2019 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles are of the most likely teams to make a splash at running back even though UDFA Josh Adams had an auspicious start to his career. Darren Sproles might retire, Jay Ajayi is a free agent, and Wendell Smallwood is still just a committee back. Whatever plans they had for Clement are up in the air with this injury hanging over him.

NFL - Keelan Doss caps solid Senior Bowl

    Source: NFL.com - Daniel Jeremiah

California-Davis WR Keelan Doss had four catches for 55 yards in the Senior Bowl Saturday, Jan. 26, and Doss stood out as one of the smoothest receivers throughout the week, according to Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doss is part of another deep class of wideouts that is following seemingly impossibly deep classes the last two years. Wide receiver guru Brad Kelly compares him to James Jones.

NFL - Ryan Finley impressing teams

    Source: NFL.com - Daniel Jeremiah

North Carolina State QB Ryan Finley had the 'cleanest' game of any quarterback at the Senior Bowl, according to Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com, and Jeremiah said all the teams that spoke with Finley throughout the week have 'really liked him.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This still only puts Finley in third day consideration. This is not a very deep class of quarterbacks, but Finley at least fits in as a possible long-term backup in a best case scenario. He could also go very late or undrafted despite generating some hype earlier in his career.

NFL - Hunter Renfrow shows up in Senior Bowl

    Source: DraftWire - Gavino Borquez

Clemson WR Hunter Renfrow caught fives passes for 65 yards, including a 35-yard reception, in the Senior Bowl Saturday, Jan. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Renfrow is a limited prospect, but he'll be a productive slot receiver in the NFL. Teams that want but don't get Adam Humphries in free agency can look to Renfrow in the draft.

    Tuesday Update

HOU - WR Demaryius Thomas may be cap casualty

    Source: Spotrac.com

Houston Texans WR Demaryius Thomas is a candidate to be released this offseason since the Texans would save $14 million in salary cap space if he is released, according to Spotrac.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas should be released unless he takes a big pay cut and he might be waiting until the preseason to be signed as he comes back from an achilles rupture. His useful fantasy days could be over.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman may not return

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent RB Tevin Coleman may not re-sign with the Falcons this offseason since the Falcons have RB Devonta Freeman under contract through the 2022 season, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Falcons also have Ito Smith and Brian Hill, so they have no reason to overpay Coleman when a team that wants to give him a larger role and more cap room will. His dynasty value is very volatile right now.

BAL - WR John Brown struggled with Lamar Jackson

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent WR John Brown caught only eight passes for 114 yards and one touchdown in seven games when QB Lamar Jackson took over the starting job. Brown recorded 34 catches for 601 yards and four touchdowns in nine games with QB Joe Flacco. Brown said he is open to returning to the Ravens but would expect things to change if he re-signed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown will be a great sleeper in drafts with his final numbers hiding how productive he was before Jackson took over. He should be starting somewhere next season, and depending on his destination be even more productive than he was with Flacco.

KC - TE Travis Kelce looking at history

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce can become just the third tight end in NFL history to achieve four straight seasons of at least 80 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards. Former NFL TEs Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten are the other two.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kelce vs Ertz will be a good debate in 2019 drafts, with both worthy of second-round picks in redraft leagues.

DEN - Drew Lock of interest to John Elway

Source: The Denver Post - Mark Kiszla

Missouri QB Drew Lock has impressed Denver Broncos general manager John Elway. The 'worst kept secret' during the Senior Bowl was Elway's affinity for Lock, in the opinion of The Denver Post's Mark Kiszla. Kiszla opined that Elway is 'smitten' with the prospect.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It doesn't help the Broncos at all to have this out there if Elway is genuinely interested in Lock, as they have at least two quarterback hungry teams picking in front of them. This could also be put out there get teams off of the scent of the quarterback the Broncos really want. This is just the opening chapter in what should be an intrigue filled offseason for Denver, Jacksonville, the Giants, Washington and Miami as they address long term instability at quarterback.

NE - WR Josh Gordon still being treated

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams

New England Patriots WR Josh Gordon remains at an inpatient drug treatment facility, according to a source. The Patriots are paying for Gordon's treatment while the NFL's Players Association is working with Gordon to help treat his addiction. Gordon is serving an indefinite suspension for diluted drug test samples - a violation of his reinstatement.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon probably won't return to the NFL in time to play next year and it's reasonable to assume that he may never play again considering the hoops the league forced him to jump through to get back on the field. We hope that he can find some stability and peace away from football.

PHI - QB Nick Foles heading elsewhere?

Source: 104.3 The Fan - Cecil Lammey

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles is expected to be released this offseason as there is not enough salary cap space for a franchise tag or a trade. Foles carries a cap hit of over $20 million. If Foles is released, the Eagles would be compensated with a third-round draft pick in 2020.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foles might not generate enough trade interest to justify more than a third round pick in exchange anyway. The Eagles have seemed to want to do right by Foles and allowing him to pick his new team via release would be the best move to achieve that goal.

NYJ - RB Kareem Hunt not an option for NY Jets

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Free-agent RB Kareem Hunt is unlikely to be of interest to the New York Jets, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Enough time has passed for Hunt to likely get signed somewhere, but that team will have to have a plan to deal with the PR storm the signing will generate. Hunt is obviously still a top talent and should be held in dynasty leagues, but he could start out as a backup who has to earn his touches.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown not cleared for trade talks

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown has not been granted permission to seek a trade, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is still a very difficult situation to predict with a significant chance still of Brown returning to the Steelers.

NFL - Terry McLaurin earns rave reviews

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

Ohio State WR Terry McLaurin's ability to find holes in zone coverage and beat man coverage should make him a productive slot receiver in the NFL, according to multiple scouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McLaurin might have gained more draft value than any other receiver or player in Mobile last week. He was underused at Ohio State like Michael Thomas, and could work his way into the top 10-12 wide receivers and the second day of the draft.

NFL - Mobility an issue for Tyree Jackson

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

Buffalo QB Tyree Jackson is too much of a 'statue in the pocket,' according to an AFC coordinator.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is a high-upside project, but one that will require a few years before he is even trusted to be a backup. Expect him to go on the second or third day and monitor his development.

PHI - RB Josh Adams not in Philly's plans?

    Source: CSNPhilly.com - Andrew Kulp

Philadelphia Eagles RB Josh Adams lack of involvement during the postseason is a sign that he has 'fallen out of favor' with the coaching staff, according to Andrew Kulp of CSNPhilly.com, and Kulp expects the Eagles to part ways with Adams this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Adams had some moments in his short stint atop the depth chart and looked like no mere UDFA. He should catch on another roster if he let go, but his fantasy upside is limited by his lack of involvement in the passing game.

PHI - RB Jay Ajayi finished in Philly?

Source: NBC Sports Philadelphia - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles RB Jay Ajayi's (knee) history of knee injuries will likely cause the Eagles to part ways with him this offseason and target a running back in the 2019 NFL Draft, in the opinion of Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ajayi was still running well at the beginning of the season but there will likely be skepticism about his ability in free agency in a league that is depressing the value more of running backs with each passing year. He'll likely have to fight his way up a depth chart to have fantasy value next season.

PHI - TE Zach Ertz battled injuries down stretch

    Source: PennLive.com - Daniel Gallen

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz (undisclosed) said he was less than 100 percent down the stretch of the season, but he didn't reveal the exact nature of his injuries.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ertz production did tail off at times with Nick Foles, but this could be a better explanation than a lack of chemistry. Still, many players are getting worn down by the end of the year, and it will be difficult to expect more from Ertz next year.

    LT,

I'm playing in a 8 team fantasy playoffs league, league was cut down to 4 teams after week #2 of playoffs, and now down to 2 teams for the Super Bowl. I've got first pick (1,4,5,8,9 etc) this week, it's a .5 ppr league (1-qb, 1-rb, 2-wr, 1-flex, 1-te, 1-def, 1-k). My question is would you pick Todd Gurley 1st, after his last game I'm scared he maybe more hurt than the Rams are letting on? Have you got any info on him, and what would you do?

Unfortunately I know as much as you do when it comes to Gurley. Still hard not to take him first though, although if you are feeling super-frisky, you may want to consider Edelman.

That's not a bad idea, this allows me to exploit the fact that there's only 3 big game WR's in this game (Edelman, Woods, Cooks). We have to pick 2 each (only 1 RB each), so unless he takes Woods & Cooks with picks 2 & 3, It'll guarantee me 2 out of the big 3, and he can worry about gurley not being 100%

If I have to chose between J. White or S. Michel, who would you take? Using current form Michel has balled out so far in the playoffs. But they seem to be more of a toss up to me.

I think White has a big day catching passes to slow down the Rams pass rush so I’m playing him over Michel on DK where it’s full point PPR.

    Thursday Update

LAR - PK Greg Zuerlein limited Wednesday

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Los Angeles Rams PK Greg Zuerlein (foot) was limited in practice Wednesday, Jan. 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zuerlein will play on Sunday, but we won't know whether the injury will affect his performance until we see him take a field goal or extra point attempt.

CAR - QB Cam Newton feeling good

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) said his surgically repaired shoulder is feeling good.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is good news, but inconsequential until we see him on a field, which probably won't happen until the open of training camp at the earliest. The Andrew Luck saga has taught us to pay attention to everything, so this is still worth noting.

LAC - RB Melvin Gordon to wait on extension

Source: The Orange County Register - Gilbert Manzano

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon said he wants to wait until free-agent RB Le'Veon Bell (Steelers) signs a new contract this offseason before he considers signing a contract extension with the Chargers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon's case might not be helped by Bell's contract considering Bell's handling of his last contract impasse and his history of suspensions. Chances are Gordon will get a deal more like David Johnson's than Todd Gurley's.

LAC - WR Tyrell Williams thinks he is No. 1 WR

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent WR Tyrell Williams said he believes he is a No. 1 receiver in the league. He said he will work on improving his route running and blocking.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams isn't a #1, but he added more to his crossing route/go route repertoire and should be one of the highest paid free agent wide receivers this year. Mike Williams dynasty stock is about to get a bump with his departure.

NFL - RB Kareem Hunt investigation nearing cessation

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Free-agent RB Kareem Hunt's (Chiefs) ongoing investigation by the NFL will be finished soon, according to commissioner Roger Goodell. Hunt is able to sign with a team, but he would not be able to play as long as he's on the commissioner's exempt list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most signs point to Hunt being signed somewhere this offseason. He can rocket his way to the top of a depth chart easily, so this is still a buy low moment in dynasty leagues.

LAR - WR DeSean Jackson wants to be a Ram

    Source: ESPN.com - Jenna Laine

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR DeSean Jackson mentioned Wednesday, Jan. 30, that he desires to play for the Los Angeles Rams, although he is under contract with the Buccaneers for one more season. Jackson played for the Washington Redskins while Rams head coach Sean McVay was the offensive coordinator there.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is almost certainly going to be released, but the Rams don't really have a need for him. Perhaps if he takes a big pay cut he could end up in Los Angeles, but don't count on it. The Sean McVay craze apparently applies to players in addition to owners and general managers.

NO - WR Michael Thomas looking to cash in?

    Source: MMQB - Albert Breer

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas is eligible for a contract extension and could be in line for money in the 'Odell Beckham neighborhood,' according to MMQB's Albert Breer. Thomas is set to earn $1.148 million in 2019 before becoming a free agent in 2020.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Saints would be smart to lock Thomas up at 2019 prices to keep goodwill between him and the franchise and get a savings from 2020 rates when the cap is almost certain to go up again.

NO - Garrett Griffin landed three-year deal

Source: The Times-Picayune - Josh Katzenstein

New Orleans Saints TE Garrett Griffin was signed to a three-year contract when he was promoted during the playoffs, according to The Times Picayune's Josh Katzenstein.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Saints will be a top fantasy destination for a tight end now that Ben Watson is retiring, but Griffin would still have to fight Josh Hill and Dan Arnold for playing time even if they don't sign a free agent or draft one of a deep class of rookies.

MIN - Minnesota looking at Will Grier?

Source: 104.7 FM Denver - Benjamin Allbright

The Minnesota Vikings have some interest in West Virginia QB Will Grier, according to NFL draft analyst Benjamin Allbright.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Grier didn't stand out at the Senior Bowl and won't go in the first round. Just how far he'll fall will depend on his post draft performances. The Vikings also have Kyle Sloter developing as a backup with Trevor Siemian entering free agency. There could be a spot for a third quarterback.

SF - RB Jerick McKinnon recuperating quickly

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is reportedly 'six weeks ahead in terms of time frame' as he continues to make his way back from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered during the preseason, according to general manager John Lynch.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McKinnon was signed to be the lead back, although Matt Breida was reportedly going to be in a committee with him before McKinnon's injury. Breida was impressive but couldn't stay healthy last year, so expect the team to employ a committee that should be fluid in terms of workload from game to game.

    Friday Update

NFL - Kyler Murray to make decision soon

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Former Oklahoma QB and NFL Draft prospect Kyler Murray said Thursday, Jan. 31, that he hasn't yet decided on whether he'll commit to football or baseball, but it will come soon with spring training in February. 'Right now, I'm just working out, happy at the Super Bowl,' Murray told NFL Network.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is going to be hard to hear for NFL general managers, who hate uncertainty. Murray has enough questions on the field that it will be hard for him to go in the first round if he hasn't fully committed to football by draft day. Certainly this will be a focus of his interviews, and this episode could just end up being a ploy to get more out of the Oakland A's if Murray doesn't choose football or he isn't truly on the fence about the direction of his professional sports career.

PIT - Ex-coach: WR Antonio Brown mess fixable

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown can still settle his differences with the team, former Steelers coach and current CBS analyst Bill Cowher said Wednesday, Jan. 30. 'I'm hopeful that at some point, in my opinion, that coach Mike Tomlin, Antonio Brown and Ben Roethlisberger will get in a room, shut the door and air their differences, and talk about where they are and see if there's any way they can get aligned moving forward,' Cowher told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. '... This is not a one- or two-year relationship. This is a period of time with all three of these guys. They've done some really special things. You just hate to see something get misinterpreted. If it's something irreconcilable, then you move on.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The longer this goes without any strong indications of a trade in the works, the more likely it becomes that Brown just comes back to the Steelers. That might be the best outcome for his fantasy stock.

NYJ - NYJ won't break bank for Le'Veon Bell

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent RB Le'Veon Bell is of interest to the New York Jets, but they won't break the bank to get him, in the opinion of beat writer Manish Mehta.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This will likely be the stance of most teams. Bell isn't going to get the money he is looking for, and he might not even get the money he turned down when he didn't play on the franchise tag last year.

NE - QB Tom Brady could be extended

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady could have his contract extended after the season, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. Brady would currently count $27 million against the cap in 2019.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brady has been giving the Patriots elite play at a below market price for his entire career. There's no reason it would change in the final years he plays with the team. Look for the Patriots to get a too good to be true deal in this age of escalating quarterback salaries.

CAR - QB Cam Newton's shoulder improving

Source: The Charlotte Observer - Jourdan Rodrigue

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) said he's greatly increased his range of motion in his throwing arm since undergoing surgery a week ago. He expressed his relief in his bothersome shoulder ailment being fixed. Newton is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So far so good in the news about Newton's surgery. We'll be monitoring this closely and share Newton's relief that the issue was surgically repaired instead of just rested in the offseason.

NFL - Preston Williams banned from Combine

    Source: NFL.com - Nick Shook

Former Colorado State WR and NFL Draft prospect Preston Williams was informed Thursday, Jan. 31, that he won't be able to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine because of a 2017 arrest for an altercation involving a woman, per league policy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams rivals Mississippi's DK Metcalf as the most talented receiver in the draft, but NFL.com draft expert Lance Zierlein reports that he is off of many draft boards. That doesn't mean he'll go undrafted, but it does mean that it will be telling to see who takes a chance on him and when.

PHI - QB Nick Foles an unenviable scenario

Source: NJ Advance Media - Ryan Dunleavy

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles is likely to part ways with the team this offseason, and some current teammates are concerned about some of his potential landing spots. 'I would hate to see him with the Giants just because I hate playing my friends, and if I end up back in Philly I'd have to play him twice a year,' Eagles DE Chris Long told NJ Advance Media. 'But I think whoever gets him is going to be very lucky. He's a leader. He's a franchise-type quarterback. The tough thing is we have another franchise quarterback, a guy who is homegrown and is going to be a great player for a long time to come.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's clear Foles has greatly endeared himself to his teammates, which is a big selling point along with his postseason success. Jacksonville seems like one of the best destinations for him among the quarterback needy teams.

NYG - RB Saquon Barkley runs off with award

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley has been named the 2018 Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year, as decided by an online vote of fans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is an easy call, although Phillip Lindsay's accomplishments were more unlikely and impressive considering his UDFA pedigree, and no one would have argued if Colts linebacker Darius Leonard won the award.

NFL - WR Malcolm Mitchell hopes to play again

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Curtis Crabtree

Free-agent WR Malcolm Mitchell recently underwent his 10th knee surgery but remains hopeful that he can return to the NFL despite having been out of action for the better part of two years.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mitchell can play when healthy, but it's very unlikely he'll ever stay on the field for long enough to have a fantasy impact again. He serves as a warning for teams looking to draft players with a history knee problems.

DAL - Dallas a fit for WR Adam Humphries?

Source: The Dallas Morning News - John Owning

The Dallas Cowboys could be interested in Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Adam Humphries if WR Cole Beasley departs in free agency, according to the Dallas Morning News' John Owning, who believes Humphries could fill the slot role at a reasonable price.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Humphries and Beasley have similar skillsets, but Humphries is four years younger. Chances are Humphries will come with a higher price tag, but both could be coveted with slot receiver becoming a more important position in 21st century NFL offenses.

MIA - Miami eyeing 2020 for QB

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

The Miami Dolphins are high on QBs Tua Tagovailoa (Oklahoma) and Justin Herbert (Oregon), according to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, who believes the team will not splurge in free agency or select a quarterback in the early rounds this year while angling for a high pick in the 2020 draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's some speculation that Jake Rudock could start for the team at quarterback. Look for the Dolphins to unload high-priced veterans this offseason and make moves more for the long term after many fruitless years of win now moves.

DEN - RB Phillip Lindsay may be ready for workouts

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay (wrist) said he expects to participate in some of the workouts this offseason. General manager John Elway said Lindsay is on track to take part in organized team activities and the June minicamp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lindsay should remain the starter, but the new offensive staff could seek to make Royce Freeman a bigger part of the offense to preserve Lindsay. Getting back on the field as early as possible will be good for the outstanding UDFA.

    Saturday Update

PIT - WR Antonio Brown says winning is priority

    Source: USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown said his priorities are on winning during a video interview Friday, Feb. 1, at the Super Bowl in Atlanta. 'I just want to win,' Brown told USA Today. 'I just want to win, play with a team that's gonna win. That's all I want. Doesn't matter where.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That leaves a lot of teams on the table, and shouldn't materially affect his chance to get traded, as most losing teams wouldn't want to give draft capital to get Brown outside of a win now window.

CLE - QB Baker Mayfield happy with hire

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield said he believes in head coach Freddie Kitchens and is excited to have offensive continuity. 'We had something special and I want to build on it,' Mayfield said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good for the Browns for giving this duo a chance to continue what they started last year. Mayfield should at worst be a streamer's delight next season and he's being selected as a low QB1/high QB2 in early drafts.

CLE - WR Rashard Higgins wants to return

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns impending free-agent WR Rashard Higgins said he wants to re-sign with the Browns this offseason and hopes to agree to a long-term deal before the start of free agency.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Breshad Perriman also could return before free agency. The Browns would probably get a discount if they sign before free agency. The good vibes created around Freddie Kitchens and Baker Mayfield are making players want to stay. Higgins won't have stand alone fantasy value but could make it harder for other Browns targets to hit their ceilings.

NFL - Kyler Murray not talking about workouts

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray will not say if he will participate in the NFL Scouting Combine or his Pro Day because it would imply that he will be playing football. Murray has said he will decide on if he will play baseball or football soon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray seemed unprepared for very predictable questions. Either he and his camp are misplaying a move to get more out of the Oakland A's or they really aren't sure what sport he commit to and don't know how to present that in a tactful way. It was not a good day for his NFL draft stock.

LAR - RB Todd Gurley should see plenty of work

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley is expected to have a big role in the offense against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII, according to head coach Sean McVay.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gurley's demotion in the NFC title game was play-based and there's no guarantee that he'll measure with CJ Anderson running well and the Patriots run defense a major weakness. Both running backs should see a lot of work on Sunday.

LAR - PK Greg Zuerlein ready to play

    Source: Patriots.com

Los Angeles Rams PK Greg Zuerlein (foot) fully participated in practice Friday, Feb. 1, and is not on the injury report for Super Bowl LIII.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a sigh of relief for a team that needed every bit of Zuerlein's leg to get this far. He should be good to go with no restrictions on Sunday.

GB - RB Aaron Jones set league pace

    Source: NFL Network

Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones led the league with his average of 5.5 rushing yards per attempt during the regular season. 'I've always felt like I've belonged in the conversation as one of the top backs,' Jones said Friday, Feb. 1, in an interview with NFL Network.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is retaining his running backs coach in the new regime and it is unknown how much Mike McCarthy held back his workload last year. He might end up being worth the third/fourth round pick he'll likely cost in drafts this year.

PHI - RB Latavius Murray a fit in Philly?

    Source: NJ.com - Zack Rosenblatt

Minnesota Vikings RB Latavius Murray could be a free-agent target of the Philadelphia Eagles, in the opinion of NJ.com's Zack Rosenblatt, who believes Murray's abilities as a receiver and reasonable price tag could make him part of a timeshare with holdover RB Josh Adams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray can work in a downhill running game, but he's a committee back through and through. The Eagles could also aim higher at the position in the draft or free agency. Murray wants to start again, but is unlikely to get a huge payday or workload in free agency.

MIA - No takers for QB Ryan Tannehill?

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill is expected to be released during the offseason, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero, who believes the chances of the team finding a trading partner for Tannehill are 'not great' due to his contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cincinnati could be a possible destination, as could Washington or maybe even Jacksonville. Tannehill should get at least one more chance to start, or at least compete with a rookie to start this year.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman a key player

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman's (groin) return from injury can help lead a turnaround in 2019, according to owner Arthur Blank.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tevin Coleman wasn't popping off big plays at the frequency he had in years past, so the offense did miss Freeman. In early drafts, he's going multiple rounds later than his 2018 ADP.

LAC - WR Tyrell Williams too pricey for Bolts?

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent WR Tyrell Williams is a player that the team would like to re-sign, according to general manager Tom Telesco, but Telesco said it might not be 'realistic' to bring him back.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams should get a lot money as a starter in free agency than the Chargers will be willing to give him. He'll have some speculative value in dynasty leagues depending on where he lands.

WAS - QB Alex Smith improving

Source: The Washington Post - Les Carpenter

Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith (leg) is making improvements but is not looking too far ahead in his rehab, according to team president Bruce Allen. Allen denied a recent report that stated the Redskins are preparing for Smith to miss the entire 2019 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Until we hear otherwise, it is best to assume that Smith will not be playing next season. The Washington pass offense was still one of the most anemic in the league with him at the helm, so Washington's targets and offense won't lose much as long as the team can competently replace him, which is not a given.

WAS - QB Josh Johnson could re-sign with WAS

Source: NBC Sports Washington - JP Finlay

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Josh Johnson is one of the players the team is trying to re-sign, according to team president Bruce Allen.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson was at least able to make Washington a credible competitor when he was in the lineup, although he does seem redundant with Colt McCoy as competent, but limited backups. The team needs to find someone better than McCoy or Johnson to start with Alex Smith's 2019 in question.

I am not sure I want Antonio Brown on my team if I’m trying to build a winner as crazy as that sounds because he seems like a headcase and a guy that would be a locker room cancer. Of course, I want Josh Allen to go to my Niners and that likely won’t happen if they got AB.

    Sunday Update

OAK - Oakland an option for QB Nick Foles?

    Source: 94WIP Radio - Eliot Shorr-Parks

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles might be traded this offseason, and the Oakland Raiders are a potential fit, in the opinion of 94WIP Radio's Elliott Shorr-Parks. New general manager Mike Mayock has already said Nick Foles is a franchise quarterback, although Derek Carr is in the midst of a five-year, $125 million contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This would only work if the Raiders can trade Carr. The Raiders are smart to give off signals that they are open to another quarterback because they are in a prime trade up spot at #4 if a team wants to leapfrog the Giants and Jaguars at 6 and 7 to get their pick of the crop and also prevent the Raiders from taking their guy.

PHI - QB Nick Foles' option likely to be exercised

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles' $20 million option for 2019 is expected to be picked up by the Eagles this offseason, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foles can still buy his way into free agency for two million, but then the Eagles can tag him, while knowing that they can't fit his nearly 25 million dollar salary on the tag under the cap. The chess game with Eagles and the rest of the league is just getting started.

PIT - WR Darrius Heyward-Bey could return

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent WR Darrius Heyward-Bey could re-sign with the Steelers this offseason, in the opinion of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Heyward-Bey was drafted way back in 2009 at #7 as one of the last signature Al Davis picks and ended up sticking around the league on the strength of his special teams play. He'll have a better chance of making the team if Antonio Brown is traded.

NYG - Dwayne Haskins interested in joining NYG

Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz

Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins said he would love it if the New York Giants selected him in the 2019 NFL Draft because he was a fan of the team growing up.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

#6 to the Giants is about as high as Haskins could go unless he dazzles in the pre-draft process and gets Oakland to bite or induces a trade up ahead of the Giants. Dave Gettleman might not be sold on Haskins as being worth the pick with premium offensive and defensive linemen on the board.

PIT - WR JuJu Smith-Schuster dangerous after catch

    Source: ESPN.com

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster's 617 yards after catch were the sixth most in the NFL in 2018, and he was the only wide receiver ranked in the top 10 in the category.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith-Schuster has been better than expected in each of his first two years and will cost a second round pick in 2019 drafts, and his ADP could go up if Antonio Brown is traded. He still has a lot of room to grow at 22.

LAR - Smooth rehab for WR Cooper Kupp

Source: Los Angeles Times - Sam Farmer

Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp (knee) said he has not experienced any setbacks as he rehabs from knee surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kupp is only going the fifth or sixth round of early drafts even though he was providing value around the third round level before his ACL tear. This news makes him seem like a value at his early ADP.

NYJ - QB Sam Darnold ready for Adam Gase

    Source: Newsday - Al Iannazzone

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold said he is 'excited' to work with head coach Adam Gase and believes Gase can make him a better quarterback. 'I think he's going to help me with everything, mechanics, but mainly how to play the position in the NFL,' Darnold said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gase has a reputation as a quarterback whisperer but didn't really done much to earn it during his time in Miami. Darnold might be a good enough prospect that any coach that works with him will look good.

CLE - Dontrell Hilliard could have role

    Source: ClevelandBrowns.com - Andrew Gribble

Cleveland Browns RB Dontrell Hilliard could be a part of head coach Freddie Kitchens' three-back sets next season, according to Andrew Gribble of ClevelandBrowns.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hilliard has some receiving skills and should make the team again but this is an offense that can't find enough snaps for Duke Johnson. We should still keep Hilliard on our deep dynasty radar.

Gurley is expected to continue splitting carries with C.J. Anderson during the Super Bowl, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

ANALYSIS: There's been some chatter about Gurley potentially returning to his workhorse role with two weeks to recover after the last game -- a 26-23 win over the Saints in which Anderson held a 37-32 advantage for snaps and a 16-4 edge for carries. The split should tilt back toward Gurley against the Patriots, but that doesn't mean he'll recoup the high-usage role he handled Weeks 1-15 of the regular season. Rams running backs coach Skip Peete recently revealed that the team talked to Gurley before the playoffs and told him he wouldn't be getting his accustomed workload. Peete also mentioned that Gurley did an excellent job in pass protection during the NFC Championship Game, though his strong work was overshadowed by a pair of first-quarter drops and a lack of touches thereafter. Both player and team maintain that Gurley is fully recovered from the knee injury which held him out for Weeks 16 and 17.
