Robyn, the wages vary state to state. Where I am it is $2.13 an hour. But that gets entirely consumed by taxes. Then I usually owe more in April. Some states pay their servers more. CA for instance pays servers minimum wage - which just went up to $7 something recently. Must be nice.

Willie, all credit card tips are supposed to be reported to the IRS. So yes, we pay taxes on those fully. Cash tips are a different story. That's up to the particular waiter and what he chooses to claim on a nightly basis as having received in cash. Where I work, 95% of my tips come from credit cards - many of them the thick black AmEx's.

Bread, getting big tips happens as does getting bad tips. My problem with Matstupid is I have served MANY celebrities and sports figures and not one of them was as bad a tipper as he was. Jason Varitek tipped me the amount of his tab AND signed a linen with a personal message on it. I guess him being a Red Sox player had something to do with it.

ZTballer, I wish I was kidding. the pay here is $7.55 an hour. After 66 hours of work for 2 weeks I was left with $170. They take out for the taxes on the tips iI declared as well as $60 for my insurance. Granted if you add the insurance back into the equation, it is $230, but still that is all you get when you declare your tips properly.

75 cents for a 4.25 tab is a 17% tip.

If you are in Panama, is it perhaps that tipping is not common in Panama and maybe he misunderstood your effort? If you are in the US, you should have at the very least threw in a single or two and let him keep the $.75.
