As for people getting "real" jobs...there is a place in society for many different jobs and professions. If servers/bartenders didn't exist, you wouldn't be able to stuff your face or order a drink at a bar or restaurant. For an engineer, you aren't using the appropriate skill set out in the real world.Comment -

#90
Back when I was 19 and living in Michigan, we could drive to Windsor to drink legally. The Canadian servers/bartenders LOVED Americans because we not only tipped US dollars (back when they were worth much more than they are today) but many of us tipped well.
lakerboy, do you pay your servers better than American servers are paid?
they get paid the minimum server rate which is $8.25 an hour. they average $17-$20 an hour after tips. This rate is govt mandated they were making $5 an hour 6 years ago. it has gone up every year while their work quality barely improvesComment -

#97Some of us take it seriously. I have had many other jobs but I always end up back at a restaurant. Been doing it off and on for 15 years and I'm very good at what I do. I've also spent countless hours studying (and drinking) wine. I work in a very nice restaurant that caters to a very particular clientele. It is not as easy as you may think to juggle 4 or 5 tables at a time full of very demanding people; to be able to intelligently answer their every question related to food and wine; and entertain and ingratiate yourself to a room full of strangers on a nightly basis. True professional restaurant service is an art and I am proud of what I do. The hours are great, the money is good, and I don't ever have to take my work home with me.Originally posted by acarmelo1I am glad that you all want to live all your life serving, and is that what you want well Good Luck.Comment -

#98It has been quite some time since I have known what a server made (in the US), but from my recollection, I thought it was between $2.13 - $3.25/hour, excluding tips. Which means that these individuals are expected to work for tips.Originally posted by lakerboythey get paid the minimum server rate which is $8.25 an hour. they average $17-$20 an hour after tips. #103Yes in ontario where i live we MUST pay these folks $8.25 per hour legally. Their tips is of their own creation with proper performance and of course good kitchen staff which produces good food. If thats what they pay them in US no wonder Caspy is complaining.Comment -

#104Of course not, Willie! That is why the US government believes that the average server in the food service industry has an hourly wage (including tips) between $7-8/hour. We all know that a good server/bartender makes much more than that.Originally posted by Willie BeeAgain I ask, is there ANY waiter/bartender out there that has claimed 100% of their tips on their income tax statement?
