As for people getting "real" jobs...there is a place in society for many different jobs and professions. If servers/bartenders didn't exist, you wouldn't be able to stuff your face or order a drink at a bar or restaurant. For an engineer, you aren't using the appropriate skill set out in the real world.

I just looked it up and one site lists $66k as the average engineer salary.

I stand by my original statement. It's pretty close if you work at the right places.

Some of us take it seriously. I have had many other jobs but I always end up back at a restaurant. Been doing it off and on for 15 years and I'm very good at what I do. I've also spent countless hours studying (and drinking) wine. I work in a very nice restaurant that caters to a very particular clientele. It is not as easy as you may think to juggle 4 or 5 tables at a time full of very demanding people; to be able to intelligently answer their every question related to food and wine; and entertain and ingratiate yourself to a room full of strangers on a nightly basis. True professional restaurant service is an art and I am proud of what I do. The hours are great, the money is good, and I don't ever have to take my work home with me.

It has been quite some time since I have known what a server made (in the US), but from my recollection, I thought it was between $2.13 - $3.25/hour, excluding tips. Which means that these individuals are expected to work for tips.

I think he talks about how much he pays his employees. Every restaurant owner has a different pay structure.

He is in Canada, pavs. I may be wrong, but I believe that many restaurants in the US start at a pretty low hourly rate because they consider tips as part of their supplemental income.

Of course not, Willie! That is why the US government believes that the average server in the food service industry has an hourly wage (including tips) between $7-8/hour. We all know that a good server/bartender makes much more than that.
