#7Saban realized that he would have to coach instead of just rolling out overwhelming talent; the transfer portal has changed everything.Comment -

#9Saban is an old dog not keen on new tricks. He probably didn't feel like navigating this uncharted college landscape. It's beyond challenging to recruit in this day and age, knowing that you have to venture out and land new talent while simultaneously tasked with trying to shepherd the talent already on your roster. The incoming and outgoing turnstiles are always cranking and you all you can hope for is a net gain after the dust settles.Comment -

#11Saban ahead of the curve in paying players, stealing signs, stockpiling talent, etc… He invented NIL. He didn’t like the current and future landscape. It does not play to what he built. Many have caught up and he didn’t like that. Great career. Enjoy retirement.Comment -

#13Besides recruiting, the SEC is adding Oklahoma and Texas and the CFP is moving to 12 teams, so the minefield is daunting. It's suddenly a whole lot harder to win a national championship whereas in the past, for Alabama, it usually boiled down to a couple games.Comment -

it was the SEC expansion and him not winning a title since 2020 season that had him thinking the last 3 seasons were more indicative of what was to come.

#17Also just to add to all the reasons listed he is 72!
It's time, he has accomplished a lot and although people think that a 11-2 record is bad there is about 120 other teams that wish they could win 11 once he has done it at least 13 or 14 out of the last 17.Comment -

i think it was NIL + transfer portal + upcoming 12 team playoff and SEC expansion.
he was interviewing assistant coaches yesterday morning all the way until the moment he did a 180 and decided to retire.
he is a young 72 with a lot of energy left, just like pete carroll.
72 is the new 62 to 65.Comment -
