No, it's not something for nothing. It is investing in companies so they can take my money to do things like hire people, buy equipment, advertise, etc, so the company can better serve the community. The reason I invest rather than spend the money is for the expected return. If I can't get a return, I would go blow the money on immediate gratification. It is not taxed less than wages if it is held less than a year. The middle class pays less than the rich.
