I mean, really? This is the holy grail of political correctness. Other teams have voluntarily, or been practically forced to change their names, but if this one can be pulled off, its the ultimate victory for the overly sensitive, tree hugging, hypocrites that want to change every tradition known to man. Kudos to Daniel Snyder by saying that he will "NEVER" change the name. The thing I like the best is that the politician pushing this plans on keeping his season tickets. Hypocrite!

#6When a professional team names itself after anything, they are showing respect for that thing. The Washington Redskins are saying they would like their team to display the heroic bravery that the team associates with the Indian tribe. Why would any Indian, or non-Indian, find this insulting? Amazingly enough, some tribes did go along with the political correctness idiots and claim that they were insulted by this praise from professional sports. I suppose next we will see the animal rights activists want all pro and college teams to get rid of the animal mascots. After all, we must not insult the sensibilities of our four-legged friends either .Comment -

#9I saw a news report just last week in which some high students, for their prom, voted to have some sort of a "redneck night" as the theme to their dance. After the local media found out and let the news out, the students were forced by the school to change the theme. So, perhaps, this change would get noticed after all. ( I am not sure exactly who the media or the school thinks is going to be offended by using the term redneck, tho. Most rednecks probably don't consider themselves to be rednecks, or if they do, they are probably proud of this association --- just as the Indians or our four-legged friends should be.)Last edited by BranchDavidian; 05-10-13, 10:52 AM.Comment -

#11It is not the name change that we are protesting. It is the forcing of the name change for a ridiculous reason - when, in fact, the supposed offended parties are actually being lauded.Comment -

#17Not that I care whether the name is changed (I don't), but imagine a team named the New York Wops, or the Arizona Wetbacks, or the Atlanta Negroes. Those are all pretty close equivalents. Not that all Native American references are offensive- "Braves" is perfectly respectful and in pretty good taste IMO. But you cannot seriously argue that "Redskins" is not wildly disrespectful. Anyone angry about it isn't being "soft"- they're pissed off, and for a real reason. Example- if you're out in public with your girl or wife, and some a-hole starts verbally harassing her for no legitimate reason, are you being "soft" for getting pissed and standing up to the guy? Or is it better off to just keep your mouth shut and just shrug off the insults?
If I were a native, I still doubt I'd care enough to roll my eyes. But I'll acknowledge that there are some who have a right to be angry about having an undignified racial jab aimed at their culture, which already barely exists thanks to genocide, and only survives while clinging to abject poverty. Again, not "offended." Angry.
But in the grand scheme of things, I guess the name of a football team doesn't quite compare to that day as a kid when you learn that your entire culture was wiped out by people who would happily do the same thing all over again if they had the opportunity. So. Minor quibble.Comment -

#23Are you guys serious ? Have you done that many mental gymnastics that your heads have landed so far up your ass that you actually think the Native Americans have some sort of good life on this reservations and that they all own casinos and just get drunk for the hell of it ?
Educate yourselves or forever remain ignorant.
"The last step in a genocide is the oppressor being able to step back and go 'Look what these people are doing to themselves' "
The fact that we can use the name Redskins and not Yellowskins, blackskins, whiteskins or tanskins shows the degree of how much respect our society actually has for Native Americans. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis shows us that there is a connection to words and phrases that we use and how we view the world. By keeping this name, we are basically acknowledging that Native Americans are not entitled to the common courtesies that we give to each other.
Personally, it's a name sports team name. Nobody's life is going to be made worse if the name changes. i am not sure what the big deal is.Comment -

#26Let tribes vote on the name change. If they vote to change it, change it. If not, leave it alone. Simple.Originally posted by Dark HorseIf with religion you mean belief system, your belief system is your religion. Again, it matters not what it is. You believe in it, you are loyal to it, would defend it, and yet have no proof of it, other than that, at one point or another, you chose to believe in it. Self-hypnosis. I love how everyone romanticizes the injuns like they're heroes. The vast, vast majority of them were complete savage animals. To everyone, including their own tribes.
Go fish the indian water in Lake St.Clair sometime. They make you buy a special $100+ license just to cross into their "sacred" water. It's quite ironic they consider it "sacred", considering its lined with empty 5 gallon buckets, beer cans, syringes, and trash everywhere.Comment -

#35This movement has been going on for well over twenty years, so I don't think they are going to get their way in this case. As others have said, all high schools and some colleges have caved, but there is way too much money in pro sports. No team with a long history of a nickname/colors is going to change their name and risk the backlash.Comment
