*Redskins were 14-2 in the regular season. They narrowly got by the Niners, 24-21, in the NFC Title game.

Context of this game is that the Redskins came in with a lot of acclaim. 12-1 in 1982, 16-2 in 1983. Redskins had won 28 of their L31 contests, and they were defending Super Bowl champs.
What a great year, Washington was so cocky they thought it would be a sure win! I had forgot how close the regular season game was! This was the game that sold me on Allen I didn't think he was
the best player on the board when they drafted him.
Some younger posted probably confused about Seahawks playing in the AFC, of coarse they were moved to NFC during expansion!

This was a matchup of the two best teams in the league. Both came in via the 1-seed:

    In the Regular Season:
*MIA was 14-2. 2nd-year Marino set the league record for pass yards and pass TDs (48).
*SF was 15-1. Only blemish was a 3-pt home loss vs the Steelers.

With the two name QBs, the game started wide-open. Scoring on first three drives, MIA 10-7.

But the Niners dominated the second quarter. Montana was textbook on passes to Roger Craig. Two TDs by Craig and a scramble TD by Joe. San Fran, 28-10.

This was an excellent Niner team. It was arguably Walsh's best team.

*The Off Line was solid with the likes of Fahnhorst and Cross.
*The Def Line was bolstered by additions of Fred Dean and Gary Johnson from San Diego.

Two van Schamann Field Goals late in the first half. San Fran 28-16 at half.

Another Craig TD in the 2nd half. Niners shut out Marino after halftime.

It was one-sided. The Niners were too good.

38-16. Second title for the Niners/Walsh.

    SB20: Patriots vs Bears

*Patriots arrived via the upset route. New Eng won AFC title in Miami thanks to six Dolphin turnovers.
*Bears were a steamroller. They won their first twelve games before losing in Miami. They shut out both of their playoff opponents.

After conceding the opening score, the Bears ran roughshod against the overmatched Pats. 46-10 in a lopsided game.

Even Refrigerator Perry plunged in for a TD. Much has been made of Walter Payton not getting that touchdown. But I look at it differently.

McMahon summed it up well. The Patriot defense was keyed in on Payton that Payton became effective as a DECOY on this day. Most notably, the focus on Payton left single-coverage on speedster Willie Gault. Gault would have a career day with four catches and 129 yards.

This was not a fair fight. The Patriots were not even a hiccup for the Bears.

The Bears were an awesome team. They are worthy of mention as the best single-season team ever.

Specifically, the Bear defense was filled with star players. They brought the pain against opponents.

I'll make one more comment about the Bear defense:

*MLB Mike Singletary was a great student of the game.

I used to think the Bear success was talent and aggression. But Singletary distinguished himself as a great film-study. He would read formations and anticipate plays.

The outcome was utter domination. In a way the NFL has rarely seen over the course of a full season.

Hi, Agenda. I'd be a little worried about Kelce getting older. How much does he have left?

Mahomes will have his chances. The AFC is now a landmine with all the young quarterbacks.

Also, I think Reid is close to the finish line. No obvious replacement for Reid.

    SB21: Broncos vs Giants

*Broncos arrived via win over top-seed Cleveland. That game featured Elway's late drive to tie the game which they won in Overtime. Part of a series of games where the Broncos broke the hearts of Brown fans.
*Giants were top seed in the NFC. After losing the season opener, the Giants lost only one more game (at SEA).

The Giants were awesome in the playoffs:
*Jim Burt knocked Joe Montana into next week in the route of the Niners.
*17-0 shutout over Redskins in the NFC title game.

I have to put one asterisk on the NFC in 1986:
*The Bears were defending champs. They might have been a strong challenger to repeat. That is until Charles Martin (of GBay) committed an act that crossed the line from unsportsmanlike to criminal.

Well after a pass play was over, the 300-lb Martin slammed an unsuspecting Jim McMahon onto his shoulder. The injury sidelined McMahon for the rest of the season. It was boorish behavior and left the Bears unsettled at the QB position.

Elway's unmatched arm strength found some early holes in the Giant secondary. FG and an Elway scramble TD. Broncos, 10-0, in the 1q.

The Giant's run-first offense crossed up the Denver defense with play-action passes. Phil Simms was very sharp. TD Pass, DEN 10-7.

The Bronco Off Line handled the Giant pass rush early on. Elway drove the team again deep into Giant territory. This time the Giant goal-line defense stiffened. They forced a short FG attempt, which Karlis pushed wide.

George Martin sacked Elway in the endzone for a safety. DENVER, 10-9.

In the 2:00 drill, Elway moved the team into the redzone. Karlis again missed a make-able FG. Denver went into halftime with the lead...but had left six points on the board.

In the 2nd half, Parcells went for it on 4th/1 out of a punt formation. Backup QB Rutledge narrowly converted. Simms continued the drive. He was pinpoint, TD pass to Bavaro. Giants, 16-10.

With the secondary loosened up, the Giants gave a heavy dose of RB Joe Morris. With the Broncos keying on Morris, Simms ran the fleaflicker. Long completion to McConkey, TD Morris. Giants, 26-10.

In the second half, the Giants bottled up Denver's one-dimensional offense. McConkey TD catch on ball that bounced off Bavaro's hands. Late consolation TD pass by Elway. Giants, 39-20.

Phil Simms completed 88% of his passes to win Super Bowl MVP. Funny story from the nite before the game. Jim Burt kept hearing noise from the adjacent hotel room. It was preventing him from sleeping. He put his ear to the wall. It was Phil Simms practicing his line "I'm going to Disneyworld."

24 hours later Simms would repeat that line for real. If 1985 was The Year of the Bear...1986 was The Year of the Giant.

    SB22: Broncos vs Redskins

*Broncos were 1-seed out of the AFC.
*Redskins were 3-seed out of the NFC.

The NFC bracket broke open. Vikings won at top-seed San Francisco. Redskins won at Chicago, who now had McMahon back. Those outcomes set up the 3-seed Redskins hosting the Vikes for the NFC title.

Chalk this one up under: Some times it takes a little extra. In Washington's win at Chicago, I saw one of the best individual plays imaginable. In a tight game Darrell Green caught a Buford punt around midfield. Green ran up the right sideline and then reversed course to the left. In the process he leapt over a would-be tackler and separated rib cartilage. The speedy Green dusted the pack and scored a punt return TD. He ran the last 30 yards holding his side.

*Note: 1987 was a strike year. Season was shortened to 15 games (including 3 SCAB games).

It was an inauspicious start for the Redskins. Broncos connected on a gadget play, Sewell pass back to Elway. Karlis FG, 10-0.

And the Redskin offense was stymied. Starting QB Doug Williams injured (at least temporarily).

In the 2nd qtr, Williams came back...and the Redskins took off.

    *Long TD pass to Sanders.
    *TD pass to Clark
*Long TD run by Timmy Smith

    WASH, 21-10. Just that quick.

*Another TD pass to Sanders. 50 yards.
*In the 2:00 drill, TD pass to Didier.

Williams had four TD passes in the 2nd quarter. As a team, the Redskins had scored 35 pts in the qtr (a SB record). 35-10 at half.

The WASH defense squashed any comeback bid. Elway threw three INTs, and they sacked Elway five times.

Doug Williams won the Super Bowl MVP. Just as easily could have gone to RB Timmy Smith, who ran for 204 yards to break Allen's SB record.

42-10 final. Right in the heart of the NFC string of dominating Super Bowl wins.

    1988: Bengals vs Niners

*Bengals: 2nd Super Bowl appearance. First appearance had also been versus the Niners.
*Niners: 3rd Super Bowl appearance. Going for third title of the decade.

More Bengal-Niner parallels. Plenty of notes on this one.

Start with the coaches. Wyche was a little-used 3rd-string QB on the 1970 Bengals. Walsh was an offensive assistant on the Bengal staff.

The Bengals were buoyed by the prospects of young QB Greg Cook, had won AFL Rookie of the Year in 1969. Cook, unfortunately, took a heavy hit in the 1970 preseason. Cook was knocked out for the rest of the year and in fact never recovered from the injury.

Cook had the prototypical arm to stretch the field. With Cook out, the depth chart was reduced to Virgil Carter and Wyche. Without their star QB, the Bengals started out a meager 1-6.

As Walsh examined the offensive scheme, he determined that it was foolhardy to ask the pop-gun armed Carter to throw many deep passes. Out of necessity, Walsh cut back the playbook to shorter passes with an emphasis on check-downs to Running Backs. The revamped offense played more to Carter's capabilities.

The reborn Bengals won the last seven games of the season. They won the division with an 8-6 record and made the playoffs.

When talking of the 1970 season, Walsh sported a cheshire cat-grin as if he was stealing money. Writers later attached the title of the "West Coast Offense" to Walsh's playbook. Walsh viewed it as a misnomer and jokingly said "it should be the Midwest Offense" because of its roots in Cincinnati.

The Bengals featured a solid offense:

*Line was bolstered by Munoz and Montoya.
*Rookie RB Ickey Woods scored 15 touchdowns. It made for TV clips with his "Ickey Shuffle" Touchdown celebration.
*QB Boomer Esiason won the league MVP.

*Anthony Munoz had a bit part in the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"?

As a student at USC, Munoz played the role as an orderly. His size played perfectly on the screen. He is on screen for a few minutes.

1st key action: Niner LT Steve Wallace injured. He's out for the game.

But that's nothing compared to the Tim Krumrie injury the Bengals suffered shortly thereafter. It was a gruesome injury, even more graphic than the Joe Thiesmann injury IMHO. Krumrie's leg broke in two places. Seeing his leg flop in the wind didn't even look real. When I think about this game, the first thing that comes to mind is the Krumrie injury.

In the third quarter, the Bengals drove nicely featuring the quickness of James Brooks. Another FG, CIN 6-3.

On the next Bengal drive, however, Esiason was picked off on a nice effort by Bill Romanowski.
