not a lot of speed in here ..could probably get the lead or maybe sit off the one just inside of him..think paco might be aggressive with that one early..overall looks like a comfortable setup to me

The 1,4,8 could all go if they tried.

Paco is Paco on the 1 horse.
The 4 wired them last time with a very slow pace.
The 8 showed speed going 7/8ths first out in 9 months. They went 22+, 45+ and he was bumped early. Graham usually wants them to relax but maybe with the outside post one of these 3 thinks they can make the lead and walk the dog.

Personally, I hope all 3 want to try make the lead and walk the dog.

      Works for me.

I am not going to kneejerk a comment on Kingsbarns tonight.

          Let me think about it.

I need to think this through .

looked to me like he was fighting saez from the 1/4 to the 1/2 .. unable to relax and settle which you mentioned was key to a good performance..at least that was my observation and it's certainly not my expertise.. maybe the fractions were so slow he just wanted to run faster and resisted saez's attempt to reign him in..if this was the case it makes sense he would be tired at the end

since he came back went from 7f to 1 3/16 (big stretch) and now had to do it again..he did win convincingly last out but maybe going further than the 3 conventional middle distances (1 -1⅛ miles) 2nd and 3rd off the layoff might have taken it's toll on him also

not giving him a pass for what he did but imo there were some reasons for him to run below expectations

Just busy until about 11. Once I get to Laurel I will have plenty of time between races especially as the gap between races widens.

Ask away and if anyone is at Laurel today let me know.

                  Talk later EZ.

                                    derby
                                    preakness (3 weeks)
                                    belmont (4 weeks)

                                    logic..

instead of a month (vs 2 weeks) compromise at 3 ..make it a little bit of a throwback (durability) and adds something special to the challenge vs exact spacing between all three .. after having derby and preakness 3 weeks apart 4 weeks to the belmont would be good for recovery from those races along with taking into account the distance of the race .. i'm guessing more horses would actually stay through the series with this spacing

maybe some financial incentives if you run in the preakness after the derby ..10% bonus above the normal share for top 4 finishers

                                    ie:

                                    $2M purse

                                    4th 5% (or 6%)
                                    100k + 10k bonus

Yep. IMO I don’t think we shou change; that’s what makes it difficult to earn that Triple Crown Status. That’s what makes it exciting. My only thing is the winner must run unless he is injured. That’s just my two cents.

I have said it many times but here goes again. I was never around trainers wanting to give 6-8 weeks between races. Even 4 weeks was a real gap back in the day. I don't grasp that mentality. I respect it but never raced when that was the thing to do.

It was great to see all three top finishers come back in 2 weeks as batt said. It kind of validates spacing of these races. But trainers are hard headed. I doubt it will be a more than a small blip on the radar.

Racing has to figure this out . All parties must be in lock step. Whatever the outcome, being flexible and compromising in thought process seems like it will be needed . But two entities, being trainers and management that have rarely had a knack for that have to agree and follow through. Racing needs it but I'm not sure both are willing to figure it out.

                                          Hope they do.

Been talking and betting since the 3 rd. Lol.
Going to work on the 12 th but will be sure and post the Preakness thoughts prior to.
As we get older, we get together less. Sign of the times I guess. But as a result, the stories and the laughter fly and every time we looked up there was 6 minutes to post time and we had barely started handicapping.

So I apologize for not posting more. There was plenty to talk about yesterday with the racing. Like, how about the 1 post getting left badly in 4 straight sprints. Couldn't blame the jocks. The 1st three were HOF'ers. Forget the 4th one. No fault I could see from the handlers in the gate. That was totally weird.
There were several other things as well. We had a winner that dropped in half after the race started on the tote board. On a huge handle day no less. Thanks CAW's. Boy does that crap need to be fixed. You wonder why casual players are skeptical of horse racing? Stuff like that cannot be acceptable but yet it is.

Anyway, great time yesterday. We had some winners and plenty of laughs. That too me is a great day at the track.

I will post on some previous comments and any new ones you might have and get caught up asap.

Hope you all had a good day yesterday.

                                            All the best.

We can agree to disagree. Horses have run every 2 weeks for years. It just gets highlighted at triple crown time.

                                                Thats awesome !

I bet that felt fun down the backside, exciting around the turn , surreal half way down the stretch and unbelievable at the wire didn’t it?

                                                Just great!

And smart take on training the horse.
You never take a horse to the gate just to be sure. You would ruin many more than you might help breaking a lot. You probably already knew that.
Trust the team is solid as it comes Batt.

                                                  Thanks STR!
It was surreal! I watched him gallop in the morning and he just seemed to glide over the "off" track. That being said his speed figures were below the favorites.(as you know)
I told my Dad,Mom and friends that hey" I have a horse running in the Preakness" How many horse owners can say that! I'm hoping he can finish in the money. Then Muth got scratched ... and it was down to him and bafferts horse for the lead. I figured STG would lay off of him.

STG is a grinder.. (reminds me of John Henry) I think I mentioned this earlier in another thread....gets in front and doesn't want other horses to go by.
When he was loping along on the back side and Torres took a peak behind him(around the 5 furlong pole).... I said to myself " Son of a .. he may have a chance!!" He knew he had some horse underneath him still....
At the top of the stretch.. when MD started to make his move.... STG just pinned his ears back and switched leads and said" I don't think so"

Yeah I was yelling at the TV Jumping up and down... wasn't even listening to the announcer!!! When He crossed the Line it was UNREAL!!!!
Wholly Cow I just won a triple crown race as an OWNER!!!!!!

Then My phone was going off the crazy.... My friends and family were texting, calling all very excited!!! so very very cool!!!

I've been betting on horses since I was 5/6 ( first bet los al at night...Kenny Hart was the jockey after a day at Disney land lol)
Growing up my best friend and I always dreamed of owning a horse...( he passed away) When I got older I got to work with my cousin at the training sales in the winter time and bought into a few horses .... so much fun!! ( I have a story about one that is pretty cool..taking my dad to the track..sorta behind the scenes)
Anyway never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have a chance to have a horse run let alone win a triple crown race!

And thanks for the comments On the training aspect!

So People .... poo poo the idea of "Micro shares " of owning a race horse..... It's not about the money... it's about being involved and actually having personal involvement in each one.
Like I've told other people... giving me a hard time... uhm wait you hunt your paying 4000 per seat for a duck blind.. freezing your arse off... in hopes that a duck will fly by and you get a chance to shoot at it???? and you bought the rifle and bullets... Hey not my bag.... but if you enjoy it so be it... same goes for golfing... fishing , buying sports jerseys.. going to a sporting event..etc.. fill in the blank.... I ENJOY being involved with the horses this is my"Hobby" ....
Full disclosure... I've had around 10 horses with MRH and this is the second horse that I'm on the + side making a profit...... But again it's not about the money it's about the hope, thrill..excitement!!

I was a little hesitant to bet big on Seize the Grey ( I only had the exacta box) cuz I didn’t think Torres was ready for big show. I still remember him as an apprentice last year. I guess Lukes has a lot of faith in him .

I liked that he gave him a shot and Torres was very grateful for the opportunity. Apparently a month before Torres was on a horse for Lucas and rode a bad race. Lucas ripped him a new one all the way back to the barn.... But the kid listened and learned and look what happend!

Yeah, I read an article just now about Lukas coaching Torres. When I saw Mystik couldn’t get to the lead turning home; I thought it was over for MD for that triple crown quest. I’m glad he stayed and got second to score my exacta. Torres seems like a good kid, hopefully fame won’t mess him up and he can stay focus and improve. Anyways, don’t want to hog up STR thread. GL moving for.

That is a very cool story Batt.

                                                            Really happy for you.

I really like the story about growing up and dreaming about something that ends up a reality. A song from ELO called "When I was a boy", which is on my Spotify list , reminds me and probably many about growing up and having a dream or two about when we get older and what we wished for as a kid. I think most of us did.
I'm sorry to hear about your friend who passed away at a young age I assume. I really try to believe that as long as someone is still thinking about you, even if you are gone, your not really dead yet. Don't know if that's true but it's nice way to think about it.

That race is certainly one of those things on a short list that you will never forget.

So enjoy the moment. I hope it lasts for awhile but in horse racing, as you know, it can be gone in a blink. But they can never take last Saturday away from you. Good for you. And savor everyday the ride goes on, hopefully for a long time.

After you told me about all the owners, I thought about a guy named Jim McCue. Jim has been the track photographer in Md. for the last 50 years+. I don't know how much a win picture costs today but they were 10 bucks in the 70's. Obviously Jim's extra income is enhanced when he can sell multiple copies of a win picture and your team winning might have padded his retirement portfolio quite a bit . Lol.

Jim is truly one of the best people I ever met at the track. Such a nice, genuine person. Happy for him. Real happy for you.

                                                            Congratulations again Batt.
