#282Ill,
There's footage of Miranda and Marcelo at the ADCC in 2007 online. Will try to review asap. The way I see this fight... After re-watching Miranda and Gerald Harris yesterday, I was reminded of how much of an edge MM will have in the stand up against Maia -- MM is dynamic with his shizz. I agree with you in that he should just work the stand up in this one and pick Demian apart. He's known as a decorated Brazilian wrestler, but I hope to God he doesn't decide to flaunt those credentials against Demian Maia...
And even if MM lands one of those high kicks to stun Maia or knocks him down with a punch, I can't imagine he'll jump into Maia's guard. So I'm leaning toward MM by decision, with the potential for a KO standing. (ongoing crazy bad judging in decisions does leave some minor concern though)
Only way for Maia to win is to get it to the mat -- And that's why I need to see Miranda's ground defense before I add to my current wager. And even at that, MM should make it as difficult as he possibly can to prevent Maia from getting it down; ie, use his length and reach to keep distance. (Although those long a$$ limbs of Miranda do give something for Maia to grab a hold of)
One final thing I need to review tape of is Maia's takedowns. Only one I can vividly recall is that sweet leg trip he used on Sonnen. But if MM keeps his distance, that won't happen. So Maia would have to (1) pull guard, (2) catch a MM leg kick, or (3) shoot. So anyone who wants to freshen my memory regarding Maia's takedown skills (I'm particularly interested in whether or not he has ever shown good shooting ability), please do so.
BOL to all of you...Comment -

#283have you seen the article on him at mmajunkie EDU?
"While Miranda is still making his way in the UFC, the 6-foot-3 Brazilian pieced together an impressive amateur wrestling career, and his loss in the UFC was the first as a mixed martial artist. And while early career wins over eventual UFC fighters Rick Story and Joe Vedepo helped prepare Miranda for the big time, he says his training with Silva and former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida has been invaulable"
"Miranda recently returned home to Washington after spending time at the famed Black House camp in Los Angeles where he did his best Chael Sonnen impersonation in order to help Silva prep for their UFC 117 title fight."
wish I had footage to the fight that he won against Rick Story, either way, that's one hell of a win against an awesome wrestler like story, I'm determined now to find that fight footage.
just saw the Miranda by decision prop at +452, definitely agree with your assessment of the play, probably end up adding a bit on that as well
for anyone that cares, my write-up is now up on SBR's homepageLast edited by illmatick; 08-26-10, 05:36 AM.Comment -

#285thanks Vaughnay, I really appreciate it
jesus, paddypower just might be surpassing 5dimes as the premiere mma book, seems like they're even putting out their props a lot faster, I would kill to have gotten Randy at +200 to win in the first round
I wanted to use either randy by sub or randy in round 1 as my prediction for the article but 5dimes still hasn't released those linesComment -

#287Nice write-up bud. I agree with most of what you wrote other than the Penn/Edgar fight. I think it will be a mistake for Edgar to come out with the same gameplan as the previous fight - Penn is a smart guy and I think he realized in the last fight that Edgar never really hurt him. I think Penn is going to be super aggressive in this fight especially as the fight moves into the second round. Edgar is quick, but I think Penn wont be scared to come forward and cut off the angles quickly knowing that he doesn't have to fear Edgar's power. I think he will do a much better job at changing levels and making Edgar think about what he's about to do next, keeping Edgar more static and flatfooted. All of that said, I dont see any value in Penn's line so I wont be betting on the fight. Hopefully Im wrong and you cash your ticket lol.Comment -

#288appreciate it ecco, I don't even really disagree with most of that, it's sick how many times I've changed my position on who will win the rematch. either way I see a small amount of value in the decision prop
just for the record, ..the current UFC article on the front page isn't mine, who is Neville Hope?Last edited by illmatick; 08-27-10, 06:25 AM.Comment -

#299UFC 118: Penn rumoured to have trained only three sessions a week
By Gareth A Davies Boxing and MMA Last updated: August 28th, 2010
7 Comments Comment on this article
The rumour mill has been in full swing at UFC 118 here in Boston this week. The soundings from some areas were that BJ Penn, attempting to regain his UFC lightweight title, had only been able to train three times a week.
Secondary rumours were that he was having difficulty cutting to 155lbs. In fairness, he looked solid at yesterday’s weigh-in. He had Frankie Edgar had a fine stare-down and were a little lost for words when Joe Rogan asked them a few questions after the face-off.
Gareth A Davies joins the ESPN MMA Live crew Jon Anik, Rashad Evans and Stefan Bonnar for the UFC 118 Weigh-in Special from the TG Arena, Boston Click here to watch the show.
It appears that Randy Couture even felt like a two hour workout last night, a sign, perhaps, that he is taking James Toney as an extended training session. Toney looked big at the weigh-in. Big and bulgey. Not good. His cardio will be brought into question within a couple of minutes in this fight, unless he gets the lucky strike.
There are also those pouring cold water on the notion that Toney had been grappling with Mo Lawal, and that it may have been a ruse. Indeed, Lawal, at one point, had said he had been choked out by Toney. We’ll get the form in a few hours.
Major news for the UK relating to the UFC is also forthcoming for this week sometime, I’m told. I have not been party to the details, but I understand it could be seismic.Comment -

#304Good job man. Not a good night for me. Luckily hit the Lauzon quickest sub prop to keep the losses small! Damn those American wrestlers!!! And BJ Penn has no heart I swear - guy didnt even show up last night and tried to use the same gameplan that lost him the first fight...unbelievable.Comment -

tough one, as of right now I have a slight lean towards Bradley, but I can imagine much value in playing either of these fighters straight-up, I can't wait to see how 5dimes prices their props for that one
, down to -186 right now at 5dimes
