White Sox transfer Thomas to 60-day DL

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox transferred Frank Thomas from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list Thursday, effectively ending his season and possibly his career with the team that drafted him.
Thomas, on the disabled list since July 21, has a fractured left foot. He hit 12 homers in 34 games and batted .219 after starting the season on the disabled list following offseason surgery.

Thomas has a team-record 448 home runs and has expressed hope that he will hit No. 500 in a White Sox uniform. If the White Sox decide to exercise his option for next season, it will cost them $10 million. They can buy it out for $3.5 million. Thomas is 37 and has battled injuries the past few seasons.

"It's too early to tell," general manager Ken Williams said. "In this particular case and with the dollars that you're talking about, you have to walk very lightly and be mindful."

While Williams said he would personally like to see Thomas retire with the franchise, at the very least he would like to see him on the bench for the stretch run.

"With his knowledge of pitchers in this league, he could be an asset to his teammates just by being around," Williams said.

Easily one of the most underrated players of this generation. Never got the publicity he deserved and it never seemed to bother him. He just kept putting up solid numbers. I'm really surprised The Big Hurt never won a Triple Crown because except for stealing bases, the guy could do it all.

For his size he was pretty quick in his early days. I agree, he is very under-rated. His career on base percentage is awesome. He still has power and always draws those all important walks.
