One must always be careful in dealing with absolutes when betting any sport, especially the National Football League pre-season, but a coach's record in August certainly can be used as a guide as to how a team is going to perform when the games mean nothing.
With this thought in mind, the pre-season records of Arizona's Ken Whisenhunt and Buffalo's Chan Gailey-and even the Indianapolis Colts' Jim Caldwell-suggest these coaches don't give a hang about whether their teams win or lose in the exhibition season and should be avoided.
Whisenhunt has been in charge of the Arizona Cardinals for the past three seasons and his pre-season record is 2-10 straight up (SU) and 3-9 against the spread (ATS). Gailey who takes over as head coach of the Buffalo Bills exhibited the same form when he went 1-9 SU and 2-8 ATS as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Caldwell, who was mentored by Tony Dungy who cared not one bit about the pre-season, went 1-3 SU and ATS in his first season at the helm in Indianapolis. Like father, like son.
At the other end of the spectrum, we find coaches such as the Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Tomlin who is 10-3 SU and 8-5 in the pre-season, the Miami Dolphins' Ton Sparano (7-1, 6-1-1) the new Washington Redskins' head coach Mike Shanahan who went 40-20 SU and 32-24-4 at Denver.
There are many other factors that enter into how a coach will approach each pre-season game, including the need to win and sell tickets (the Jacksonville Jaguars), the need to make an impression on a new front office (Eric Mangini at Cleveland) and the coaches who need to do something quickly to get off the haunting hot-seat that could lead to their firing (Todd Haley at Kansas City, Tom Cable at Oakland and Raheem Morris at Tampa Bay).
Here are the pre-season records of each NFL head coach.

I just like the Rockies to get the win. I think Santana is gonna be tired today. He threw a lot of pitches the last 2 games. Lets see what happens.

What i find interesting is that the Reds are favored to win this series -140 to +120 for the Marlins despite the fact Johnson is pitching tonight. I think Johnson has slowed down a bit lately.

Nice 3-1 day if angels hold on. Reds allowed the run in the ninth or it would have been a 4-0 day for a bases dummy like me. Made a nickel on the day. Not that bad i guess.
