I wish I would have seen this earlier. I've started to study how teams play during series.

For example:

In my opinion the best effort is given out in the first game of the series in order to get a leg up on the series.

Good teams don't want to get swept like we saw here with the Padres so they put out a better effort.

If the series is tied going into the last game, teams will put in a better effort in order to win the series.
