The New York Liberty and Washington Mystics will square off in another much-anticipated WNBA playoff matchup. New York has a chance to advance to the next round with a win, but Washington can force a Game 3 at home by pulling off an upset in Tuesday’s showdown.

In a matchup between the No. 2 Liberty and No. 7 Mystics, it was the home favorites that started things off with a 90-75 win in Game 1. New York had to work for it at first, but ultimately covered the 9.5-point spread with some breathing room.

Four starters finished in double figures for the Liberty in the series opener, led by a 29-point performance from Sabrina Ionescu. Jonquel Jones scored 20 points on 12 field-goal attempts, while MVP candidate Breanna Stewart needed to contribute just 10 points.

The Mystics also had four players reach double figures in scoring, including a 21-point outing by Myisha Hines-Allen. If the Mystics can get more from Elene Delle Donne (16 points) or Natasha Cloud (four points), perhaps they can steal Game 2 on the road.

In the opening round of the WNBA, the series finale is actually hosted by the lower seed. A potential Game 3 between these two teams would take place on Friday.

With the top-seeded Las Vegas Aces already past their opening-round foe, the Liberty will want to finish the job on Tuesday to move one step closer to a potential superteam showdown in the WNBA Finals. The Aces and Liberty have been the favorites to win the WNBA championship all year, and many are expecting them to compete for the trophy this year.
