The longest wait for a playoff series in the NHL playoffs comes to an end tonight when the Carolina Hurricanes host the Montreal Canadiens at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, N.C. My Canadiens vs. Hurricanes prediction breaks down the Game 1 action and answers whether the Canes will be able to shake the rust.
Sportsbooks think so. The Hurricanes are a -205 betting favorite ahead of puck drop at 8 p.m. ET, airing on TNT and streaming on HBO Max.

| 💰 Pick | ⚖️ Bet size (units) | 🧠 Why I bet this |
|---|---|---|
| Hurricanes moneyline (-198 via DraftKings) | 0.25u → 0.13u | I think Carolina is the right side here, and I'm not comfortable with the spread. However, there's no value to go full force at. |
| Under 6 (-120 via bet365) | 0.75u → 0.63u | Carolina dominates possession and Andersen has been a brick wall |
| Logan Stankoven anytime goalscorer (+210 via FanDuel) | 0.5 u → 1.1u | Leads league in goals per game in postseason |
| Juraj Slafkovsky Over 2.5 shots on goal (+115 via DraftKings) | 0.5 -> 0.58u | Physically dominant forward will get pucks on net |
Total wagered: 2 units | Max profit: 2.44 units

🏆 Who will win Canadiens vs. Hurricanes?
I'm not sure who is winning this series, but I do think that Carolina comes out on top tonight.
While there should be some concerns about rust, I don't think that will outweigh the letdown spot for the Habs off (yet another) game seven overtime victory. Give me the rested and ready Hurricanes on home ice to open with a victory.
Score prediction: Hurricanes 4, Canadiens 2
💰 Canadiens vs. Hurricanes prediction & best bet
Under 6 (-120)
Carolina's defensive structure has been unbelievable through two rounds, allowing just 1.25 goals per game. That might not be sustainable for the entire playoffs, but they should have their way tonight.
The Canes have succeeded by dominating "ice tilt" - keeping the puck away from their own net. Montreal, entering off a grueling Game 7 victory, will need to preserve energy and should look to trap and counter. Carolina's 95% PK is just a bonus to limit special-teams goals.
My preference is the flat 6 instead of the plus-money 5.5 to protect against a possible 4-2 final.
🔥 Best Canadiens vs. Hurricanes player prop bet
Logan Stankoven anytime goalscorer (+210)
With seven goals in eight games, Stankoven leads the postseason in goals per game metrics (0.88), and tonight will be looking to get the Eastern Conference Final started on the right foot.
Among players with at least five games posted in the playoffs, his shot attempts percentage (64.4%) during 5-on-5 play leads the league, and his line (with Taylor Hall and Jackson Blake) has been dominant at even strength, outscoring opponents 9-1. He's failed to find the back of the net in just two games in Carolina's quest for the cup.
In sports, opportunity breeds outcomes. His presence on the second line and the second PP have resulted in plenty of opportunities.
🚀 Canadiens vs. Hurricanes same-game parlay
We're going to build our SGP from the plays above, but using bet365 as one of the best sports betting sites that often gives the absolute best value on SGPs.
Going full-in on Carolina's victory, we'll use the poor moneyline odds with the Under 6.5 there, but get a boost by picking Stankoven to score. Anytime you mix a goalscoring prop in with an Under, you get a solid boost there.
You can't build the same parlay at DraftKings (as they're posting a 5.5 and won't let you SGP the alternate 6.5 line) and at FanDuel - despite having the best price for the Stankoven goal - you only get to +544.
💵 Canadiens vs. Hurricanes SGP picks
- Carolina Hurricanes (-200)
- Under 6.5 (-165)
- Stankoven anytime goal scorer (+190)
Best odds: +600 via bet365 (0.25u -> 1.5u)

💡 How I'm betting Canadiens vs. Hurricanes
Follow all of our NHL analysis and expert predictions this season.
This has been the story all playoffs. I'm going to dedicate two units flat to my moneyline/total/player prop picks and sprinkle a quarter of a unit on the parlay as a little fun roll of the dice. Bankroll management helps keep things in control.
You have to be careful not to spread yourself too thin during major events like the playoffs of a heavily bet sport. Just because it's a new series and we're getting toward the end of the playoffs doesn't mean to go wild. The best sports betting apps have plenty of data to set their lines at by this time of year; things are sharp. Proceed cautiously.
📊 Live Canadiens vs. Hurricanes odds: Game 1
It's not a surprise that public money has poured in on the Canes ahead of the opener, pushing the line from -190 to -200. Either way, it's at best a small play because the value is gone. I'm not big on the spread here, just with such a long layoff and Montreal's regular-season victories.
I prefer the flat 6 on the total to protect against the push on a 4-2 (or 5-1?) game, rather than risking the "better value" on the 5.5. The playoffs, ENG, long layoffs, I'll take the protection.
