The defending champions are still looking for their first win of the season, and my Pistons vs. Knicks prediction expects New York to narrowly pull out the victory tonight.

New York is among the worst offenses in the NBA, so expecting the Knicks to cover as a 4.5-point betting favorite seems like a tough ask. Tipoff from Madison Square Garden in New York is set for 8 p.m. ET (NBC, Fubo). The total is set at 218.5.

Pistons vs. Knicks best bet

Pistons +4.5 (-110 via theScore Bet)

I understand this line is +4.5 because Jalen Duren (hamstring) is out and Ausar Thompson (ankle) is questionable. However, even if Thompson doesn't play, I still like the Pistons at +4.5 (-110).

In addition to being the No. 1 seed in the East last season, the Pistons ranked first in defensive rating in the conference, while the Knicks rank 29th in the NBA in offensive rating this season. The Knicks will likely win straight up tonight - a defending NBA champion hasn't started 0-4 since 1969 - but I can't lay 4.5 points with a struggling offense against what has been a dominant defense.

Play to: +3.5 (-114)

Score prediction: Knicks 110, Pistons 107

Pistons vs. Knicks player props

Cade Cunningham Under 8.5 assists (+110 via Hard Rock Bet)

Cade Cunningham has not gone over this line in any of his three games this season. With Duren out tonight, Cunningham will be without a target down low to rack up easy assists. Per StatMuse, Cunningham has averaged 7.5 assists per game in his career without Duren.

With Duren out against the 76ers in the Pistons' last game, Cunningham attempted 19 field goals, including eight 3-pointers, so we'll likely see a more aggressive Cunningham again tonight. If he leans more into being the hero on offense at Madison Square Garden, I believe he has a greater than 48% chance of recording fewer than nine assists.

Play to: Under 8.5 (+103) or Under 7.5 (+175)

Jalen Brunson Over 25.5 points (-111 via DraftKings)

Yes, I expect the Knicks' offense to struggle overall, but that doesn't rule out Jalen Brunson putting the team on his back and having a good game.

Brunson attempted 29 field goals, including seven 3-point attempts, against the Magic in the Knicks' last game, finishing with 28 points. With the Knicks staring down the barrel of an 0-4 start, I'm expecting Brunson to be just as aggressive as he was against the Magic, if not more.

While the Pistons have been an elite defense dating back to last season, they did just allow another small guard, Tyrese Maxey, to score 29 points Sunday.

Play to: Over 26.5 (+102)
