MLB Player Props & Best Bets Today: Schedule, Picks for Tuesday
We have another jam-packed schedule on Tuesday, and we're offering our top MLB player props and best bets based on the best MLB odds.
There will be plenty of action on Tuesday with just two MLB teams not scheduled to play.
It's not quite afternoon baseball, but the Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers get things started, with first pitch expected to come at 4:10 p.m. ET from America Family Field.
We then have a couple of highly anticipated games a few hours later.
The Toronto Blue Jays look to rebound from being no-hit on Monday when they again take on the Houston Astros at 8:10 p.m. Then, the New York Yankees and their MLB MVP odds favorites look to stay undefeated this season when they battle the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field with a 9:40 p.m. ET first pitch.
Finally, the day ends with the World Series odds-favorite Los Angeles Dodgers hosting the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium, with first pitch coming at 10:10 p.m.

Orioles left-hander Cole Irvin certainly isn't known for being especially good at striking out opposing hitters, but he did make some major improvements last season with Baltimore. Irvin averaged around 6.3 strikeouts per nine innings in two seasons (more than 350 innings) with the Oakland Athletics. However, that number jumped to 7.91 last season, his first with the Orioles.
Irvin faces a Kansas City Royals team that was right around the middle of the pack in terms of strikeout rate last season, and it holds down the same spot thus far in 2024. Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer recorded five strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings on Monday, though he averages roughly one more strikeout per nine innings for his career than Irvin does.

Kansas City's big left-hander is projected to record 3.84 strikeouts on Tuesday based on the average projection from two of our trusted models. Based on that data, we're getting better than 30% positive expected value by betting on these -102 odds at FanDuel.

Right-hander Adrian Houser is set to make his regular-season debut with the New York Mets following nine years with the Brewers. Across 539 innings with Milwaukee, he averaged 7.33 K/9, jumping to 7.76 last season following two down years in 2021 and 2022. However, Steamer projects Houser to average only 6.6 punchouts per nine innings this campaign.
Houser gets a chance to buff up those numbers on Tuesday when he takes on the Detroit Tigers, who struck out at the seventh-highest rate last season. The Tigers aren't far off that mark through four games this year despite owning a 4-0 record.
However, despite the plus matchup, Houser is projected to record only 4.14 strikeouts on Tuesday, well below what he'd need to clear this total. Additionally, these +104 odds provide us with roughly 20% +EV on this bet.

San Diego Padres veteran right-hander Yu Darvish has already made two starts this season due to MLB's Seoul Series before Opening Day. Across that pair of appearances, he recorded 10.38 K/9 and owns a 1.04 ERA. However, those numbers don't paint a complete picture.
Darvish labored through 3 2/3 innings in his first start against the Dodgers, and he made it through only five innings against the San Francisco Giants in his last time out, finishing with seven punchouts.
His opponents, the St. Louis Cardinals, haven't been as good thus far this season at avoiding strikeouts as they were last year. The Cardinals owned the ninth-best strikeout rate in 2023 at 21.4%, but that number has jumped to 28.9% in their first five games this season. That serves as the fifth-worst rate.

Despite that, though, Darvish isn't projected for a gaudy strikeout total on Tuesday. His average across two of our trusted projection models is 5.55, nearly a strikeout and a half below what he'd need to clear this line.

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Graham Ashcraft posted some relatively impressive strikeout numbers in the minor leagues, but he's failed to find the same success across 250 innings in the majors. Ashcraft has managed just 6.53 K/9 for his career, and his high walk rate leads to plenty of abbreviated outings.
Ashcraft faces a stiff test on Tuesday against a dangerous Philadelphia Phillies lineup, though it is fairly prone to taking the walk of shame back to the dugout. The Phillies struck out at the 10th-highest rate last season, and they're doing so at the eighth-highest percentage through four games in 2024.

However, Ashcraft may not stick around long enough to take advantage of those weaknesses, and his projection suggests as much. He's projected for only 4.34 strikeouts on Tuesday, well below the six he'd need to go Over this total.
