The third round at the 2024 British Open will be the first time we see golfers compete after the cut line is enforced, so we have Round 3 picks to bet based on the odds from our best golf betting sites.

Windy conditions continued to make it difficult at Royal Troon in Round 2. Former British Open champion Shane Lowry holds the outright lead over the field at 7-under-par, making him the current betting favorite for the latest British Open odds.

Englishman Justin Rose ascended the leaderboard on Friday with a strong -3-under-par effort, converting four birdies to wind up T-2 heading into Saturday. A few surprise names entered the top ten, including Billy Horschel, while Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, and Corey Conners are the big names T-7 or better.

Saturday’s third round is forecast for milder winds and more dry conditions, so we may see more scoring opportunities for golfers who managed to make the cut at 6-over-par. In Round 2, no golfer went lower than 3-under, but lower numbers could be in store for Round 3.

British Open Round 3 picks

Pick confidence rating based on a 1-to-5-star scale.

Justin Rose vs. Billy Horschel 2 Ball (-115) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rose has quickly taken over the British Open with back-to-back rounds under par at Royal Troon. The Englishman ranks second in total strokes gained, including ninth off-the-tee, 12th putting, and 16th around the green.

Horschel’s surprising ascension in Round 2 came from other aspects of his game besides putting, which is normally his strength. He ranks fifth in total strokes gained through Round 2 due to sitting sixth in strokes gained on approach, 13th off-the-tee, and 27th around the green.

Rose is playing with much more momentum despite Horschel’s strong effort, as the Englishman’s worst strokes gained metric is 21st on approach. Oddsmakers at FanDuel are giving us a near pick’em for this 2-ball matchup in Round 3, so we need to take advantage, and hammer Rose to wind up with a lower score than Horschel on Saturday.

6 Shooter - Joaquin Niemann (+350) ⭐⭐⭐

DraftKings offers a Round 3 prop called 6 Shooter, in which we get to pick the golfer who will finish with the lowest score on Saturday.

The first group available is loaded with talent, including Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. However, Niemann is the golfer I’m fascinated with backing during Round 3. His resiliency after recording an 8 on the par 3 “postage stamp” hole on Friday was demonstrated with a clean back-nine, which included four birdies.

Niemann is even par, hitting 71 in both rounds while ranking 25th in strokes gained putting and 20th in strokes gained around the green. Yes, facing off against Cantlay, Schauffele, Conners, and Jason Day, all of whom occupy positions in the top ten, is a bit intimidating. However, we’re getting good value on Niemann, whose short game is arguably the best in this 6 shooter group prop.

A quarter-unit stake returns close to a full unit of profit, so let’s have fun backing the talented Chilean golfer at Royal Troon to win this 6 Shooter prop on Saturday.

Top LIV Player Live - Jon Rahm (+260) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rahm has finally turned it around at a major in 2024 after struggling at The Masters and missing the cut at the PGA Championship.

The Spaniard is available in a Top LIV Player Live prop ahead of Round 3, favored at +260 odds alongside Dean Burmester. Remember, this prop bet includes Round 3 and Round 4 performances, so we’ll need to be confident in how Rahm performs in the final two days at Royal Troon.

There’s reason for optimism. Rahm ranks seventh in strokes gained around the green and 22nd on approach, countering his mediocre putting and issues off-the-tee. Four birdies compared to five bogeys isn’t great form, but Rahm went 1-under-par on the back-nine on Friday to gain momentum heading into Saturday.

Burmester is playing better statistically, but we’ve seen Rahm’s ceiling and its leaps and bounds above his LIV golf counterpart. Let’s stake half a unit on Rahm to continue elevating his play and wind up with the best scorecard among LIV golfers ahead of Round 3.

How to bet on golf

Betting on golf involves understanding the various types of bets available and how to assess player performance. First, familiarize yourself with the different types of bets commonly offered in golf, including outright winner bets, each-way bets (which cover both a win and a top finish), head-to-head matchups between two players, and proposition bets on specific events within a tournament, such as hole-in-one occurrences or individual player performances on certain holes.

Once you've identified the types of bets you're interested in, research the players, course conditions, recent form, and other relevant factors that could influence outcomes. Pay attention to factors like player statistics, recent tournament performances, course history, and any injuries or changes in form that may affect a player's performance.
