The Indianapolis Colts acquired quarterback Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a third-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport tweeted Monday.

Ryan spent the first 14 years of his career with Atlanta after being selected with the third overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. The four-time Pro Bowler started 222 games for the Falcons and won the NFL MVP Award in 2016.

The veteran signal caller has struggled over the past four years with a 25-39 record while throwing for just 3,968 yards and 20 touchdowns this past season.

However, the Colts have a superior supporting cast to surround Ryan with.

Running back Jonathan Taylor paced the NFL in rushing yards last year, and the offensive line probably underachieved in pass protection after finishing 30th in the league in pass-blocking efficiency, according to PFF.

It wouldn’t be shocking if there was a statistical rebound from Ryan in 2022.

It’s worth noting the 36-year-old quarterback recently reworked his contract with the Falcons to lower his salary-cap hit by $12 million ahead of the 2022 season. Ryan didn’t take an actual pay cut, as he converted a scheduled salary and roster bonus into a signing bonus. His cap number is now $36.66 million instead of $48.66 million, but the Colts will be on the hook for the $7.5 million roster bonus due to be paid Friday, March 25.
