Saints vs Buccaneers Preview

In a pivotal NCF South division matchup, Alvin Kamara and the New Orleans Saints (4-8) will host Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-6) for the second time this season. Despite sitting first in the division, the Buccaneers have a worse record than the Seattle Seahawks (6-5), who currently do not occupy a playoff spot. The Saints are last in the division however, only 1.5 games separate the two teams.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers have strongly underperformed expectations this season, covering the spread three times and only once since the second week of the season. Despite being favored for each matchup this season, they have a losing record. At 45 years old, Tom Brady appears to have finally taken a step back, coming off a season where he led the league in passing yards. He has been an average quarterback thus far, ranking 15th with a 92.4 passer rating. Leonard Fournette has also been a disappointment, regressing from 4.5 to 3.4 yards per carry this season and losing the starting running back job to Rashaad White.

They are coming off a 23-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns (4-7), who scored with 37 seconds remaining to force overtime. Chris Godwin had his best game of the season, recording a touchdown while catching 12 passes for 110 yards

New Orleans Saints

Andy Dalton ranks as a top-ten quarterback in passer rating this season (95.0) but has thrown seven interceptions compared to only two from Brady. Alvin Kamara is the team’s most valuable player as the leading rusher and second-best receiving option behind Chris Olave.

The Saints were shutout for the second time this season, losing 13-0 to the San Francisco 49ers (7-4) this past week. Kamara was completely shut down by the 49ers' defense, rushing only seven times for 13 yards. He will look to bounce back this week against a rushing defense that ranks 20th in yards allowed.

Betting Outlook

The Buccaneers (-196) are 3.5 points favorites over the Saints (+164), with the over/under set a 40.5. Tampa Bay won the last matchup 20-10 in week two of the season., but New Orleans has won seven of the previous nine matchups dating back to December 2018. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 pm Eastern.
