That’s why they play the games.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, sitting atop the National League West with the best record in the National League, lost 5-3 at the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday afternoon. That delivered a big payout to a bettor who dropped an $80,000 wager on Pittsburgh, priced at +160, to win $128,000 at Caesars Sportsbook.

Admittedly, the Pittsburgh Pirates have been better than expected this season but that is a function of low expectations coming into the 2022 season. That does not mean that they have been good, as they entered Wednesday’s home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 12-17 record.

The Pirates had Dillon Peters on the mound, facing Dodgers rookie Ryan Pepiot, who was making his MLB debut.

Pepiot went three shutout innings, walking five and allowing one hit, but the game was scoreless into the bottom of the sixth before the Pirates scored three runs to break the game open.

Peters pitched three shutout innings for the Pirates and Pittsburgh’s bullpen was better in this game.

Pittsburgh slugged three home runs, delivered by right fielder Jack Suwinski, second baseman Josh VanMeter, and designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach.

The Dodgers managed five hits, with a double by Trea Turner their only extra-base hit.

Despite the surprising loss, and losing two of three from the Pirates, the Dodgers remain atop the National League West. Here are the NL West odds from DraftKings SportsbookFanDuel Sportsbook, and Caesars.
