    Brazil - Germany

    Pick: Germany 0.0 (1.90) - 4 units

OK Brazil without Neymar, so I think this bet is pretty much self-explanatory.

ed: Germany 0.0 is the same as "Germany Draw No Bet"... the bet is refunded in case the regular time ends in a draw

            pick: Netherlands -1 (1.95) - 1 unit

As stated in my parlay with Botev earlier, there should be way too much class here - mainly because of Robben and RVP though there are some other guys who can also show up.

soccer World Cup: Argentina - Belgium
              pick: over 2.5 goals (2.15) - 1 unit

I am not impressed with both team's defences, especially the Belgian. Kompany is awesome but Van Buyten is old and slow while Verthongen and the other guy with the long surname have not been rock solid in defence. Add to that the awesome attacking players both teams have (especially Messi, Di Maria, Hazard) and I think this can become a high scoring game.

Mannarino to defeat Andreozzi (1.36) - 1 unit (Manta Challenger)

I'm not convinced Andreozzi can perform well on hard against a decent player like Mannarino.

World Cup Top Goalscorer - James Rodriguez (1.72) - 4 units

ed: I am adding 3 more units, as the line did not move after the Costa Rica game. My main concern was that RVP or Robben may score a lot against Costa Rica but since they haven't, I'm pounding on James.

Erm not sure what exactly you were questioning, the goalscorer pick or the Netherlands -1. As for the goalscorer - James has 6, a bunch of guys have 4, so if RVP or Robben (they both have 3) had scored 1-2, things would've got a bit different. Anyway, I think James at 1.72 is value now (only problem would be if the match for the third place becomes a goal fest cause the teams won't care).

Been a long time since I abandoned the thread but I can't refrain from posting two bets that are good value IMO and want to see if they will hit. They are a bit comical but still.

Unibet have lines for the chess Olympiad and I like Ukraine Women to finish in the top 3 at 1.75 and Germany men to finish in the top 3 at 10.00.

Sometimes I wish chess was more popular, so that I could bet on it... but at least the fact that there is very little events that are been bet on keeps the fixes as away as possible.

(ed: Marathonbet must also have lines, though I haven't checked; the first round stars in an hour and a half)

                                              Did 2 bets today.
4 units on Krajinovic (2.10) against Smyczek and 2 units on Caroline Garcia (1.61) against Gibbs.

Will update my record later but maybe will post only how much up/down I am without many details.

Which are the power houses in chess?

In team competitions it's China and Russia in women.
Men... well in the last 2 decades Russia are kinda like Brazil in the last World Cup. They can gather at least 4 teams good enough to win the title but they kinda always fail. China won this year, which was a huge surprise. Otherwise - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Hungary, France. The US have a good team also but most of the top countries are from the ex-Soviet bloc (and pretty much every country from Eastern Europe and the ex-USSR has a very solid team because of the extreme popularity of the game during the Cold War era).

(here I speak of the so called "chess olympics"... they are the biggest team competition and it's kinda like a team World Cup but is held every 2 years. The organisation have a license from the Olympics committee to call their championship "olympics". There are some other team championships but they are of less importance... Chess olympics are fun and is (if I am not mistaken) number 4 in world's sports competitions by most nations participating. If you are a citizen of a country without chess traditions like Bhutan, Burundi or the Central African Republic, you can get semi-decent at chess, get a place in the national team and go play against grandmasters.

ed: Jarkko is a very experienced and intelligent player with a good return game. Guys like him have the know-how and patience to battle the likes of Karlovic. I think he'll manage to win at least a set (the match has just started) and keep it a close match in general.

Thanks for the info. I obviously expected the EE countries to be there, although the smaller countries and China are a surprise. It seems that China is really pushing to excel in such intellectual competitions including the Science Olympiads for students. I use to play chess a lot but didn't study it enough to play well in timed competitions. GO seems pretty awesome. Do you happen to play that?

Nope but I will definitely learn the basics of Go and Arimaa one day. China is an interesting case, both they and India are good at chess now while they didn't have strong players (if you don't count Anand) like 20 years ago.
Japan and Korea, on the other hand are nothing, I don't think they have ever had a single grandmaster. They prefer Go and Starcraft, I suppose.

As for Eastern Europe - yeah, pretty much every country you can name has a lot of solid, very solid or even top class grandmasters.
