Here's my question for you SBR_John:

My understanding is that when sportsbooks are DDOS attacked, there is usually an extortion component. And my further understanding is that sometimes the books do pay. (Of course that "understanding" comes from forum scuttlebutt so who knows?)

Why would they ever pay? I would think that as soon as someone pays, they would just be painting a bullseye on themselves for future attacks, and guaranteeing themselves more interruptions and payments. No-brainer.

Like do the attackers make some kind of promise to protect them in the future? Is there a protection racket? Is that even possible?

I simply can't see how paying would ever warrant even a moment's consideration. I would think that anyone short-sighted enough to think paying extortionists was going to solve anything, would never make it to a decision-making position in a company.

Or is the forum scuttlebutt mostly inaccurate and these attacks are not $$$-motivated and are mainly just nerd games like you have described here?

        SBR John,

Thanks for the $10,000 cash. I picked it up as promised promptly. This will not happen again soon if you make my weekly payments on time.

Books that paid were not re attacked. The fee was $30,000. If you recall sites were down 2 weeks and up to 5 weeks. These big sportsbooks make about $75,000 a day so the 30 grand seemed like a good gamble.

At the end of the day I blame SBR. We thought wrongly that our host and firewall could fend off these kind of attacks. We can in fact fend off smaller attacks. SBR will have to invest in the technology and buy more bandwidth to thwart these attacks. The process will start in the morning.

Yeah. Firewalls generally do a poor job against DDOS attacks. There are IDS alternatives that also perform stateful packet inspection and throttle your bandwidth to provide security against such an attack as well. One option you may want to consider is using a security provider that hosts your DNS with Tier-1 bandwidth and provides DDOS filtering.
