SBR sites being DDOS'ed - So what is a DDOS attack and why?

This is not the first time, won't be the last.

Basically a hacker group uses spam to infect personal computers. Once infected, these computers can be directed at a website in large enough numbers to overwhelm the sites' web servers.

To combat these attacks the techs attempt to separate the attack traffic from the legit traffic. Of course the hackers know this will be the response so they will attempt to mask their malicious traffic. This cat and mouse game will continue until enough of the malicious traffic is blocked and the site operates normally. The hackers then take their infected computers elsewhere.

These hackers are not trying to extort money. They have nothing against SBR and probably are not even sports fans. They are playing a game of Battle with the sites tech staff to see how long they can keep a site down.

The SBR staff will eventually block the malicious traffic and all will return to normal. We do apologize for the down time.

you should create a safelist of IPs for all the posters with 10+ posts. that is one manual way to keep the site somewhat operational during a DOS attack.

John, as you know,most of the DOS attacks are in fact for the purpose of extoring money. They've tried to do it with a lot of books (Sky most recently) and for the sole purpose of extortion. It's why they come wit it on a weekend, when normally a site like this will have the most traffic.

i am pretty sure the techs know how to remotely take over your pc and make your CPU run at 100% until your computer melts. if you have an old AMD chip, there is no hardwired safeguard against it.

I doubt that was anyone at SBR. They're already rolling in dough, they don't need that chicken stuff.

Tho tech people in CR, employees or the service company, may well be up to that stuff.

I think it was a DOS attack. Site is successful, advertisers expect 24/7 exposure, they figured why not try.

And the hackers figure that a "mere" forum site won't have the sophistication to take the necessary and expensive safeguards a book would.

So, a quick 50 or 100 grand. Hey, why not?

Two things;
The last two attacks on SBR over the past two years have not included any type of communication from the hackers ie; an extortion request.

We originally though this was a tech problem because our firewall did not indicate a DDOS attack. But the attack was aimed at our DNS servers and the host joined in the fight to block the malicious traffic. SBR will always report what is going on and let the chips fall where they may.

We will look for a better long term solution for preventing these type of attacks.

I agree with what you are saying (as I do in 90% of your POVs) but that figure is way to high. Is too high for most book's DoS attacks and way too much for a 'mere' forum.

SBR is not a book, and does not handle the large sums of money a book does. But my estimate is tht SBR is now the most successful (non-gambling) sports betting site in the universe. At least, the English-speaking universe.

I don't know, of course, what the ad rates are here. (I can make an estimate. ) But JJ may know.

In fact, I happened to see a curious thread (that for some reason popped up in my archived ones) from 3 years ago, where SBR John was asking JJ what kind of ad rates the other sites were getting.

JJ gave a detailed rundown, site by site. I re-posted the thread but got a mysterious silence. Maybe, when I've time, I'll try to find it. Or maybe JJ can give us some late 2008 estimates, from his vast store of knowledge about offshore books.

I, also, don't know the ad rates. But keep in mind it might be revenue sharing deals where SBR gets a cut of the losses from referrals, so it might way more than your estimate from just a particular source.

I agree also that SBR probably has the most succesful business model of all the gambling portals. But even if they are at the top, the 50-100k figure for a DoS attack extortion seems too high from what I have read and from what I have been relayed from the other side of the counter.

From what I know first hand and have been privy to in the past is seen the asian casino-only sites get extorted, and those figures never go up past 20k.
