He was simply lucky. He walked 5 and struck out 4 and had runners on in basically every inning. Verlander pitches 8 innings, 7 strikeouts, 1 walk. Should be enough for a win but that's just the way it goes sometimes.

Cleveland will finish 10 games out of first place.

That's exactly right. We all know the risks of gambling. We chose this lifestyle for better and for worse. All we can do is handicap and look for the best lines. Once we place our bets everything is out of our hands.

Even though CLEV won today, Masterson was not sharp. Just make a mental note of that and realize that he is a mediocre pitcher.

Again, do you realize the % you have to hit at to win over the course of a season taking faves of -150 or more? If not, check out Sammy's thread sometimes. Now add to that the Tigers' recent struggles and the fact that they're on the road against a first-place team that's beaten them in each of the last two nights. You do the math.

The point is you made a blanked statement about -165 being a bad number to gamble on. I said it makes no sense because it simply is not true. What would be the point of handicapping games if you went by rules like you've suggested?

I realize that if you bet more favs you have to win at a higher rate but the betting price reflects a probability. If they play a 1000 times, DET would have to win at approximate >62% of the time to be a profitable bet. But they only play one game and that's where handicapping comes in. It's not like Verlander should have been +200 today. Just handicap the games and make your own lines and see where it falls.

No sense in arguing it more.
