i know there are some athletes on this board. mine was probably keith bogans, who i had to guard in a box and 1 a few times in 1-270 basketball around the dc/md area. that boy could really play. he ended up at my original hs with joe forte....a decent hs back court.

    Kevin Garnette.
He played for Fareget (Sp?). He was in Peoria (my hometown) for the Illinois state high school championships. I was at our big gym complex and he was playing basketball. I was in on the game and was on his team. I threw him a perfect ally-oop. I was like 15-16 yrs old.

Earvin "Magic" Johnson. I played hoops with and against him the summer after he graduated from high school: right before he played a Michigan State. Greg Kelser and Jay Vincent also played.

I am still amazed at Earvin's run of championships in a short period of time. Senior year in HS: State Championship. Freshmen year in college: Big Ten Championship. Sophomore year in college: National Championship. Rookie year in the N.B.A.:World Championship. Amazing!!!

Two “8-Ball” Beatings in One Day from Wilson Whitley

In the spring of 1982, my roommate at Texas A&M showed up at the condo with Wilson Whitley just a few months after Whitley’s Bengals lost to San Francisco in Super Bowl XVI. We made our way over to the Dixie Chicken for some beers and pool. For the next few hours, Wilson managed to beat the dog shit out of both of us in 8-Ball.

After too many beers and too many ass whippings on the pool table at the Chicken, we returned to the condo where Mr. Whitley proceeded to dump a different kind of "8-ball" on the glass top coffee table. Being young college students in the early 80’s, both my roommate and I were excited by this latest development. However, with his superior size and athletic abilities, Wilson was able to block out the smaller fellas in the room, thus preventing anyone else from putting much more than a cursory “dent” in his stash.

When I read the first post of this thread, my eyes kind of rolled up and I was thinking, yeah right, like anyone here has competed against any top athletes....But Garnett, Magic...wtf?

I was once at The Palms in Vegas playing the ponies, and about 20 feet to my left, sitting in a roped off section alone with some young cutie, was none other than Mr. Charlie Hustle Gamble On My Own Team himself, Mr. Pete Rose. So in a sense, me and Pete were competing against each other to pick winners...sort of. Does that count?

              Stephen Hawking.

He and I played 1-on-1 basketball and I crushed the man: final score 21-5. My speed off the dribble was just dominating.

I'll tell you one thing ... you wouldn't guess it but that guy talks some serious smack.

I once competed with Frank Thomas at a bar in Chicago. He was sitting next to me and I end up drinking more beers than he did. But he beat me on the ladies cause he left with four and I left alone.

Tim Dwight in high school football. He was so fast, he would just run 15 yards backwards and head to the other side of the field and just try to outrun everyone.

On defense they would play cover 1, press corners, both OLB would blitz and this big guy they had would stay back and just plug any runs up the middle. That team had an insane team. We were number 2 in our region they were number 1.

                        I'll describe our first series.

                        1. run up middle 8 yd gain.
                        2. short pass to WR 12 yard gain
                        3. run up middle for 6 yd gain
                        4. fumbled sweep.

I don't think we gained 20 more yards the rest of the game after that....

Dwight Gooden. We went line for line roughly for 12 hours back in 99. I lost.

Back in my day, I was a decent fencer. At my peak, I went up against some of the best... Jim Carpenter (US national Champion), Michael Marx (5 time Olympian), Scott Hanson (US epee team on many occasions).

Love fencing! Was trained by an Olympian during my days in Europe.

Thanks for reminding me. Almost thought I was one of the few here who never crossed swords with a famous athlete.

LeBron James - Akron SVSM played us my Soph year. He was amazing then, too.

Cameron Maybin - Played him in the 2004 Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, NM. He struckout 3 times in the game vs. my team. He still won the tournament MVP, though. Something like 5 HR in 6 games.

I once competed against some of the Superbowl XXXI Champion Green Bay Packers.

I was in Vegas just after the Packers won the Superbowl and was shooting dice at the Mirage when a bunch of Packer players showed up and started playing craps at the same pit as me, I knew some of the players names and that they were Packers only because of other gamblers in the Mirage who knew who they were. I would have recognized them only if they were in full uniform.

How did I compete against them?

I was playing the Don't while they were playing Pass/Come.

Webb left, and Webb up the middle... The first kickoff was good because we pinned them at the 4... What do you expect our kicker was good... We stuffed Webb excepted for three plays...

I managed to nick the second pitch for a foul tip to avoid striking out without at least touching him in three pitches. Also bowled against L-l-l-l-l-l-lester Hayes when we were both at A&M, if that counts. But as far as the best athlete part of this question, that's a no-brainer and goes all the way back to the mid-60s when I played Little League with Mark Murphy who went on to become an All-Pro safety with the Redskins. It was obvious from the start that he was head-&-shoulders above the rest of us.
