Iverson a helluva soccer player????....perhaps so.

Hell, there are millions upon millions of U.S. citizens in America that if they trained to be a soccer player would be highly succsessful...........however, the majority choose to participate in football, basketball, baseball, billards, poker, golf, hockey, track and field, raquetball, handball, or some other sport/activity.

The point is, 30+ current American NBA players could become a world class soccer goalie in 6 months...............

Different sports....different skill sets. It's like people saying the MMA guys would be able to beat boxers with some training. If so, there should be tons of MMA guys training to fight Pacquiao for the millions and yet none do so.....why? It's not easy!!!

No, because becoming an elite NFL football player takes YEARS AND YEARS to develop into even if one were an elite athlete and wanted to try and attain.............unlike trying to become a soccer goalie.

Comparing a soccer goalie to an NFL player...................LOL!!!

Golf is a great example as to how some sports require a special skillset. You see unathletic guys like Phil Mickelson and John Daly succeeding, while great athletes from other sports are just hacks at the game, no matter how hard they try.

Being a top goalie doesn't even come close to being able to become a world class golfer.................................G EEZUS, a few of you people are nuts.

Why dont you try it then, Fishhead? Give Chelsea or Machester United a call. Your dumpster diving skills would have given you ample pratice trying to field low shots on goal.

I was a goalie and SF in HS. I would say the skillset isn't too much different. A guy like Shaq would be terrible, but I have no doubt guys like Garnett, Bosh, or Stoudamire could become great goalies.

In his prime, if he practiced it for 6 months, MJ would have been a top 50 soccer goalie in the world............

I thought that line was utterly ridiculous until I read your last statement. Do you really think that in 4 years, the US could beat nations who have been perfecting their most popular sport for decades, nations that have consistently cultivated the best soccer players in the world? You really think the US can match the performance of a Brazilian national team in a matter of 4 years? At this pace of development, maybe the US will win a World Cup in the next 100 years, maybe not. The gap in soccer between the US and the countries that have mastered the world's most popular game over decades and decades is going to take decades to overcome.

Lots of NBA players would be excellent goalies and way better than any world cup goalies

Soccer goalies do not have much skill, anyone can play the position

Fishhead, I have respect for you and what you post on these forums, but this is seriously getting ridiculous.

If you think that the US could go from an "average" national team to a world champion in a matter of 4 years, well I don't really have to continue further, you can see how foolish that sounds already. If it ever does happen, it's going to take decades for the US to become a soccer powerhouse. To do this is impossible and to say it shows ignorance towards the nations that have cultivated and mastered this sport over decades and decades.

You could equate the athleticism of an NBA player's ability - mainly quickness and ability to lunge - as something that would be crucial to becoming a world class soccer goalie. But to say that an NBA player can develop the technique and acquire the experience that top goalies have accumulated through over a decade of play, I'm just going to say that is "inaccurate", out of respect to you. Don't think that every goalie is like England's Green.

Green is a pretty poor goaltender. Not world class at all.
