Minet, this statement is absolutely absurd. So you are basically saying that after these athletes have gone off to the NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, etc. there are no more athletes left in a country of over 300,000,000 people? I mean these sloppy fifths, sixths and sevenths did tie England the other day, albeit the score didn't accurately reflect the tone of the game. If you want to tell me that the best athletes play in the major sports to make the major money, they can still accomplish this by playing soccer in Europe, where all the top players are earning just as much money as any NBA or NFL athlete.

I thought that line was utterly ridiculous until I read your last statement. Do you really think that in 4 years, the US could beat nations who have been perfecting their most popular sport for decades, nations that have consistently cultivated the best soccer players in the world? You really think the US can match the performance of a Brazilian national team in a matter of 4 years? At this pace of development, maybe the US will win a World Cup in the next 100 years, maybe not. The gap in soccer between the US and the countries that have mastered the world's most popular game over decades and decades is going to take decades to overcome. What kind of late night drug are you smoking???

                No.

Positioning, angles, experience, reaction timing, reflexes, etc. need more than "6 months" to develop for a pro.

I barely watch Soccer, but it's obvious you're wrong.

I'm pretty sure if Chris Bosh devoted himself he could be a pro soccer goalie.

Height is not always an advantage in soccer. The greatest players are not that tall....Pele, Maradona, Platini, Zidane, Ronaldo....

I feel like in certain sports like Hockey, Baseball, soccer.... raw physical ability does not trump a slow development of the skills necessary to compete at a high level.... for instance in baseball it takes a lifetime of playing, + 3-6 years post high school playing (college/minors) to be good enough for the big leagues...

I would think that in soccer, that things we DON'T notice a goalie doing, are the things where the learning curve would take a little bit extra time... things like what angles to take to prevent a shot from happening, knowing when to charge the ball and make a play and when to let the defense do their job.

physically, I would also wonder if a guy could develop the leg strength and accuracy, after reaching maturity.... to be good enough to be a big time soccer goalie...

finally Wasn't Dikembe Mutambo a soccer goalie in his youth? if a guy with his physical assets wasn't able to make it to the top levels of the sport, that he played all through his youth..... but later was able to aquire the skills necessary to play in the NBA....

what makes us think that guys that have never played the sport, could just pick it up so quick???????????

Steve Nash, who was quite the soccer play himself in his youth... has a charity event with NBA guys trying to play soccer....

in a quote about how the NBA guys fare...

Nash's charity game gave some NBA players a chance to flash their soccer skills, and the two-time NBA MVP gave his assessment of those would could play and those who might not want to quit their day jobs anytime soon.

"In the NBA some of the best players are Leandro and if I'm allowed to say myself and maybe Jason Kidd and some of the European players."

And some of the worst players?

"I think maybe if you look at the Phoenix Suns the worst soccer player on our team would have to be Shaquille O'Neal," Nash quipped. "Sometimes I played with him in practice for fun and he tries to play in goal, but it's very hard for him to get down in the corners."

SHAQ would not even be in my top 100 for those NBA players I would want as goalie..........wtf??

Shaq is about as quick as a dead rat.

Meanwhile, the likes of KG, KOBE, LEBRON, etc.,etc. would be a top goalie within 6 months time.
