you are correct on this. you will run faster in competion. due to adrenaline, pushing each other along, possible drafting ect.

that is why for world record attempts in mid and long distances they actually use "rabbits" that only run 1/4, 1/2, and maybe 3/4 of the race.... specifically assigned to run the first half mile of the race in 1:46 and then drop out, for example to "pull along" the guy that is attempting to break a mile record.

running a mile on your own would be MUCH harder and a bit slower

the "pro" read olympic level milers will run well under 4:00 every year about 100 guys in the world will break the 4:00 mile...

      the record is 3:41 now

the 8 minute 2 mile has been broken....

98% of guys on this forum could not run 100 meters at the pace of the world record mile

70% couldn't run 40 yards at the world record mile pace

I wasnt talking about "Championship level" milers. Take it easy I was talking about average kids on a high school track team. Im sorry I didnt go to a "Championship level" track school. And again I was talking about the average pro, not the world recod holders and select few who break 4 mins every year. Calm down man, Im sorry I did have my olympic miler almanac right next to me to reference. And congradulations that your one of the 2% of SBR guys who can run a world record pace, you the man

You guys did not run 4 -5 minutes. Like this girl who said she ran 4:30 minutes in a mile and I told her how many laps she did and she tells me 3. I told her its 8 laps for 1 mile, so maybe you guys are doing 3 or 4 laps thinking its a mile. I would not believe a girl doing 4:30 in a mile because you are saying you are in men's pro division.

If you guys like I take bets that I can beat any of you in a race for 1 mile. No joke we can bet hundreds.

the mile is rarely run in international meets. so these times are slower in comparison to the 1500 times

sorry, thought I saw you say somthing about 4:30 milers being "pro"

I sure as hell didn't get paid to run that fast when I was 16

believe me that breaking 4 mins a mile is a dime a dozen these days, not a "handful"

I already posted I can't even walk as far as pecos bill does now......

Everyone has impressive times , i know there is alot of youth in the room . Jj is right you should not be running on asphalt ,but there are so many if and buts when it comes to jogging, first of all if your under 20 this post means very little , but if your over 20 you must make sure you are thin meaning for example six foot you should weigh about 150 to 170 lbs the most . Then its o.k to get into a program , over 25 have a doc check you out , always a possibily of having heart problems. If you think your heavy you will have serious problems with archilles tendon knees hip and lower back , buy a good pair if running sneakers and start walking then jocking then waling then jocking , do not push yourself pecos you are doing great take your time and work up slowly. The distance is not that important early and neither is time what is important is your target heart rate, you want to be about 120 to 140 for nearly 30 minutes, as you increase your ability you want to add two to five minutes a week and increase your heart rate to 130-145 every week or two once you stay in that range for a month then you go up to 50 minutes to one hour and yor heart rate should stay over 145 to 155 thats fr someone in their twenty to twenty five age the older you get you adjust slowoy you will know what is best for you. Pecos pick up a running book and you will learn different speed and what range is best ,but as far as i know you are in a good range and drink lots of water while your running.

No I am saying I never ran track meets. I ran for my own benefit, and my times were always within 5:20-5:30. After a certain point I leveled off, I don't doubt that meet times are different.

if you run everyday then your not doing it for health reasons, your not allowing enough times inbetween workouts for complete recovery

np. track disputes are the most vicious ive ever seen. i think cause track is physical and mental torture and people work so hard and put so much into they end up with a real passion for it

3 miles under 30 min is something I guess 95% US can't do. But if your trying to run competitively most of the people that join a 5k run finish under 26 min.

But for only starting to run for 1 little over a month that is really a great accomplishment.

In high school I ran a half marathon an hour 48 minutes. Didn't think it was anything worth bragging about back then, but looking back I'm actually pretty impressed I could do that. Also used to sprint 400 / 800m.. but can't remember any exact times and don't see the value in lying about them. Not that I'm suggesting any of you fine folks would do anything like that

3 miles in 27-28 mins is good but not marathon times. Keep it up.

very impressive, 4 miles is a long way for someone new to running.... especially on a treadmill

I find treadmill miles 3 times harder/longer/more boring than running in real life

I can't imagine trying to run for more than 3-4 minutes anymore

you'll be doing a half marathon before ya know it PB
