#88I can't believe no one mentioned Hardball with Keanu Reeves. It's not the most realistic, but gambling does play a decent sized role in that film.
I thought bookies was really good for the low budget it had.Comment -

#89No one has mentioned "Vig". Pretty good movie about sports gambling. Has the old cockeyed dude who played Colombo in it & Freddy Prinze Jr.
Casino has to be most realistic for the fact that it is the true story of Ace RosenthalComment -

#93Two for the money would have been good if it was realistic and not a bunch of crap made up by Brandon Lang to make himself look like a god, they should have based it on a fictional character to avoid Lang from over doing it on how awesome he is.......lolComment -

#94Originally posted by Nicky Santorothe gambler-- for that era...not today
In the Movie Axel lost all his bets on NBA and College Basketball from what I recall, same shit happens daily to a lot of people dealing on credit.
Don't think everything is now offshore, there is a strong, strong base of local action being taken in NY. Feds this year alone busted a 500mil a year ring and a over 400mil a year ring run by the Gambinos, Genoveses, and the Lucheses. There was also a supermarket chain in NYC a few months ago that got busted in which the owner was a gambino capo and had a ring going for decades and was bringing in tens of millions a year. I can name another 3 stories of where feds took down organized crime in NY for running large rings. All publicly posted articles.
The point is betting on credit is a very easy thing to do in some Cities, and losing is even easier. You put those two factors together and you get a recipe for disaster, mimicking the James Caan (aka Axel in the movie) experience. It gets to the point where family bailouts come into play, releasing businesses, selling a call to pay off the debts, all old school stuff.
Don't think everything is matchbook and 5dimes now, it definitely isn't. And for everytime the feds take down a big ring and it's leaders, another batch of guys waiting in line take their place. And when they are released back into society, they go right back to it. It will never go away.Comment -

#98General Gambling:
Owning Mahoney: It was a bit slow at times but I enjoyed it.
Casino: Entertaining but not really much about gambling.
Poker
Cincinnati Kid: Probably my favorite movie. After you've been around poker awhile you'll notice the small touches like them smelling the decks for glue and appreciate it more.
Rounders: I have a love hate relationship with this movie. I would probably like it a lot better if i only watched it once and had some ability to filter any and all information relating to this movie coming from another person.
Entertainment value
Poker Bustouts: After watching it I'll guarantee you'll ask yourself "wtf did that old guy have on his head?" and be sad generally.
The Rise and Fall of Stu Ungar: recent poker history that is entertaining and disturbing
Amarillo Slim The True Gambler: less recent poker history but especially entertaining because slim is so sharp.
The Grand: Forgettable. Meh and generally disliked it.
I'm not sure if we can post links but most of the ones in entertainment value can be found on pokertube if anyone is interested in watching them.Comment -

#99Originally posted by dogcityGotta be the original 'The Hustler' with Paul Newman, Piper Laurie and Jackie Gleason as Fats. Back in the day when pool halls were pool halls and not places to bring your effing date.
Newman and Gleason could really shoot pool. You can tell just by they held the cue, chalked the cue, set up for the shot, etc...they actually executed a lot of the shots that made the edit. Tom Cruise was fairly laughable as a pool shark. A real pool player could take one look at his stance and stroke...and know...easy mark.
James Caan as the gambling prof and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the gambling addicted loans officer that ripped his bank for hundreds of thousands (based on actual events at a Toronto bank branch) are classic characters for sure.
Cheers,

#103Lot of good movies listed here. Probably the best line in a gambling movie was Walter Matthau in "Little Miss Marker" talking about a horse someone is touting: "He has no speed and he quits".
Glad no one mentioned the absolute worst gambling movie of all time: "The Croupier".Comment -
