I think it's safe to say that the US is getting much better at soccer as the years go by, but they have a long way to go to reach the real powerhouses.
When Brazil decided to get down to business that was it. Not to say that the US did not do well because they did.

The US are good at a lot of sports. Probably the only one that spans the most borders is basketball. In the NBA they play at a much higher level than the rest of the world and they've proven it. But lots of other countries are very good at basketball. The US is not completely invincible anymore either. Let me remind you of their loss to the Greek national team a couple of years back. I think that even though European basketball is not as flashy or showtime as the NBA (which is a pleasure to watch) it's still very good. And basketball is probably the only sport (apart from soccer) that is played in so many other countries apart from the US.
Like someone mentioned before, the whole thing about calling teams "World Champions" when they don't compete against teams from the rest of the world is kind of funny.
The US has excellent organization and teaches competitiveness and the winner's instinct from a very young age. If they continue they will be a force that is respected in soccer in years to come, but that does not mean they will dominate the sport.
As far as the Olympic games are concerned, in my opinion, they are not what they should be. The Olympic games should represent ideals that they don't today. How can they when so many athletes are caught using forbidden substances and the ones that aren't are still suspected of using them. Also they are run by money. It's all about the sponsors. Another thing is that in ancient times wars stopped while the Olympic games were under way. Nowadays wars not only continue but are even waged harder during the games while the national teams of the countries at war are competing. So what kind of games are we talking about?
Corrupt games with false champions in an age of silicone and plastic surgery where most of the things around you are not what they seem to be.
Anyway, sorry if I got off track.
