Redemption and boxing history on the line Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. Hopkins and Pascal’s meet in a long awaited rematch after their first fight ended in a controversial majority draw, a fight that took place in Pascal’s home country of Canada on December 18,2010.
The Champion Pascal retained his Titles that night, in afight where he knocked down Hopkins twice (rounds 1 & 3), but after the 4th round, the fight was dominated by Hopkins, and he won every round thereafter. The hometown decision Pascal received that night prevented Hopkins from making boxing history as the oldest man to win the Title. Hopkins' legacy, and his desire to prove everyone wrong will only help to fuel him in this rematch.
The winner of this fight between Hopkins vs. Pascal will face the winner of the Under-Card fight, between “Bad” Chad Dawson, and Romanian transplant, Adrian Diaconu , (a favorite son of the Bell Centre).

Bernard Hopkins (51-5-2-1)
The fighter: Bernard “the Executioner” Hopkins (51-5-2-1), is one of the greatest fighters of all time, and at 46 years old has defied all the odds in both life and boxing. He is one win away from beating George Forman’s record of 45 years old, as the oldest man to win a title in boxing.
Background: Hopkins grew up in the rough streets of north Philly, where a stab wound or gunshot wound are looked at as a badge of honor. Bernard found himself on the wrong end of a blade three different times as a kid, and at 15 years old he escaped death when a knife missed his heart by a inch and punctured his lung instead.
Bernard was on the wrong path, and the chaos of his surroundings acted like a drug. He was hooked. His actions landed him in court by the age of 17 years old, where he was being tried as an adult for nine felonies, which he picked up in a strong-arm burglary case, and was sentenced to 18 years at Graterford prison.
It took B-Hop a year and half to pick up boxing in prison, but when he did he became one of the best in all 38 penitentiaries in Philadelphia. He got out of prison in 1988, after giving five years of his life to the state. He then started his professional career, where he lost his first fight in 1988, to Clinton Mitchell in a 4 round majority decision.
After the loss, he dedicated himself to training for the next two years. The transition years of ‘89 and ‘90 were hard, and left Bernard wondering whether he would return to the easy money of the streets, or to the ring.
Fighter's career achievements
Bernard chose the right path in his life, and fought again in 1990 vs. Greg Paige, in a 4 round ‘bout, that he won by unanimous decision. Bernard never looked back, and kept himself busy from 1990 to 1993, rattling off an impressive 22 wins in a row, in which he had 16 KO’s and 12 came in the 1st round, earning himself the knick name the “Executioner”.
He then met Roy Jones on May 22, 1993 for the vacant IBF middleweight Title, but lost in a 12 round unanimous decision. He won the IBF Title in a rematch battle vs. Segundo Mercado by TKO in the 7th round, in Maryland on April 29, 1995.
Bernard defended his IBF Title 12 times prior to his 2001 meeting with the undefeated Felix Trinidad. Bernard defeated Trinidad by by TKO in the 12th round, handing Trinidad the first loss of his career, making Hopkins the first undisputed Middleweight Champion of the World since “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler in 1987.
Bernard defended his undisputed title six times, and then at the age of 40 in 2005, he set a middleweight record of 20 title defenses by dispatching European champ Howard Eastman in a dominating 12 round unanimous decision.
Hopkins was then pitted against Jermain Taylor in 2005, where Bernard lost his undisputed Title in the first fight by a spilt decision, and then fell again in a rematch that came down to a by unanimous decision.
Bernard then jumped up two weight divisions to the Light Heavyweight Division where he beat Antonio Tarver in a 12 round unanimous decision for the Ring, and IBO Light Heavyweight Titles. He later beat Winky Wright to defend his Titles, but then lost them to Joe Calzaghe in a spilt decision.
Bernard had to climb the ranks once again, and did so by beating Kelly Pavlik (12R, UD), in a non-title fight, and has won three straight before the controversial draw to Pascal last year.

Jean Pascal (26-1-1)
Background: Pascal was born in Haiti, and moved with his mother and older brother, to Quebec, when he was four years old. His father, who was a well known politician, remained in Haiti. Watching his older brother become Quebec’s boxing Champion in 1996, Pascal, at the age of 13, became interested in the sport.
Pascal grew up idealizing Roy Jones Jr., which is evident in his boxing style. He started boxing at, “Club Champions St-Michel”, twice a week, where his first trainer, Sylvian Gagnon, noticed his superior athletic ability, even at such a young age.
Fighter's career achievements
Jean Pascal (26-1-1) has been fighting pro for 6 years, making his debut in 2005. He started his career as a super Middleweight, and compiled a record of 10-0 before getting a Title shot. He beat Martin Desjardins (TKO 7R), for the CQB super Middleweight Title.
Pascal picked up a few more belts, in the Super Middleweight division, the TAB Title by beating Darnell Boone (UD 10 R), and then in his next fight won the WBC Latino Title by beating Lucas Green Arias (TKO 6 R). He then fought Jermain Mackey for the WBO NABO Title, and won (12 rounds UD).
Pascal defended his NABO Title once and then beat Christian Cruz for two more titles the NABA and NABF, in a TKO in the 10th round. Pascal would go on to defended this Titles four more times.
Jean then met Carl Frosh for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight Title, and was handed his first lose of his career by unanimous decision, but Pascal was able to rebound with a win against Pablo Nievas in his next fight, earning him the WBO Inter-Continental Super Middleweight Championship with a 5th round KO.
He then made the jump to the Light Heavyweight division, where he debut vs Adrian Diaconu for the WBC Light Heavyweight Title, a fight that would be called the Fight of the Year in 2009. Pascal, despite a dislocated left shoulder during the fight, won by unanimous decision, and became the WBC Lightweight Champ.
Pascal went on to defend his WBC Lightweight Title four times since being crowned, beating Silvio Blanco (TKO, 10th round), (rematch) Adrian Diaconu (UD, 12th round), Chad Dawson (TD 11 cut), Bernard Hopkins (MD 12th round). Pascal comes into the rematch with a lot of question marks surrounding him.

Their first fight
The first fight featured the 46 year old Hopkins out-working the younger fighter in Pascal, by a rate of 41.8 punches (Hopkins) per round, to 29.2 (Pascal). Overall in the first fight, Hopkins out-threw (502 -350) and out-landed (153-86) Pascal. If it wasn’t for the two knock-downs, in the 1st round and 3rd round, Hopkins would have set the record back then by winning the fight on points easily.
The betting odds had listed Bernard hopkins at +190 the first fight, and many expected for his age to hinder his ability to keep up with Pascal. Pascal must control the pace in this rematch is he wants a chance at victory.
The Rematch
Bernard must again use his slow pace to exact the same performance he showed in the 1st fight. Pascal always throws a low out-put of punches in his fights. Jean cannot afford to work at the same low punch rate again in this fight, because it will play into Hopkins style and help the older boxer from fading late in the fight.
Pascal has to turn up his volume of punches per round and make Hopkins look like the older fighter instead of the younger, which is what happened in the first fight. If Pascal raises his punch rate, then he should win this match and out-point Hopkins, but has never exacted that style in his career. If it is the same slow punch rate as in their last fight, then Hopkins will win this time out.
Conclusion
The fight should be very much the same fight as when they last met. The pace should favor Hopkins, and his experience and tactical precision should enable him to him pick Pascal apart as the fight progresses. Hopkins has to avoid getting knocked down in the fight, and needs to use the slow pace to his advantage.
To go against Hopkins, and what he has achieved in his career, is something I’m not ready to do yet. I like Hopkins to upset the Champ, in a close fight, and to show the world that age is just a number.
The line: Bookmaker.com has listed Jean Pascal -145 ml : Bernard Hopkins +115 ml; over 11.5 -320/under 11.5 +250. Chad Dawson -500 vs Adrian Diaconu +400: over 11.5 -280ml and under +230ml
The pick: I would parlay the over’s in both of the night's fights and Bernard Hopkins small for the upset.
