Will RogersRace 8We'll humor ourselves (see what we did there) and make a selection in this five and one half furlong race. The top choice is No. 8 Leighton Kentucky. Trainer Hank Guillory seems confident in returning this horse to racing after fourteen days. She ran decently in his last here, albeit on a muddy track. No. 9 Battle Chic should enjoy a slightly shorter distance and faster surface. No. 5 College Queen visits from Phoenix where she's won at this distance. The Pick: Win/Place 8 Exacta Box 5-8-9 Trifecta Box 5-7-8-9

Howard Barish Hit the Tri & Super Box yesterday, here's what he's doing today

Will Rogers Downs Race 9The Highland Ice Stakes is the feature in Claremore, Oklahoma today. The distance is six furlongs on the dirt. Top choice is No. 3 Trumpence. We’re willing to forgive his last race at Sam Houston. Two out of three races before that were great as evidenced by the sheet figures. He also has a win over this track. No. 1 Minister of Soul visits from Phoenix with a string of good races. No. 8 Imma Bling is interesting. The trainer is a gaudy 27% with new horses in his barn. The Pick: Win/Place 3 Exacta Box 1-3-8 Trifecta Box 1-3-5-8

This 6-year-old gelding could be the speed of the speed at a track and distance where early-pace runners have done very well. Now, the Brisnet past performances state “Suspicious drop in class today,” and that is a concern as he’s running at lowest claiming level ($5,000) showing in his PP lines. However, I’m encouraged that he’s sound based on some good recent works, and if he’s cleared the run, he’s a bargain at anywhere near his morning-line odds. Wager: Win & exotics with #1 Ima Wildcat (6/1 morning line).Tampa Bay Race No. 8 (4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT)Ed Sehon likes #3 Clear As Day (7/2 morning line). “Coming back after a month away, this filly fired a bullet work last week, indicating she’s ready to roll in this maiden special weight event for fillies and mares at a mile on the turf. She’s making her third start in her current form cycle for 27% win trainer Michael Stidham and journeyman rider Angel Suarez. Wager: Win & Place.”

Dave Tuley is a good long shot player but he does have long droughts between wins.

Ed Sehon is a solid player

Trainer Mike Dini is a sneaky good conditioner. This horse returns after having a stellar 2019. Anything close to that morning line would be welcoming. No. 1 Shes Dynomite probably cost herself the last race by going wide. She ran very well. This is our fourth weekly installment of “Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes” as me and my stable of handicapping friends try to find value at the horseracing tracks that are still running during the coronavirus pandemic.
I started the week on Wednesday with a losing play, but Ed Sehon came through with a nice 3/1 winner in Tampa Bay Downs’ 8th race (see recaps at end of story), so hopefully we’ll carry that momentum into Thursday’s plays below.
We’ll update this file through the weekend, so check back each morning for that day’s picks (and again later in the 9 a.m. PT hour if any of our horses scratch as we adjust our recommendations).
                                                              THURSDAY
                                                              Gulfstream Race No. 5 (3:03 p.m. ET/12:03 p.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes #13 Chocolate Bar (8/1 morning line). “Not sure if he gets in off the also-eligible list), but this Mike Maker trainee comes out of a quick maiden claiming debut in 1:33.3. He draws outside but gets jockey Luis Saez, who has 7 winners out of 31 early starts at this Gulfstream meet and a :49 [four-furlong] workout as well.”
                                                              Gulfstream Race No. 7 (4:05 p.m. ET/1:05 p.m. PT)
Duane Colucci likes #2 Money Ride (3/1 morning line). “This New York runner drops here for a return to the turf after several good tries on the dirt. The speed this horse possesses is the key to victory as he should break quickly and be tough to catch.”
                                                              Gulfstream Race No. 8 (4:36 p.m. ET/1:36 p.m. PT)
Ed Sehon likes #7 Preacher Marsee (4/1). With enough speed to the inside, this mile on the turf for $12,500 claimers sets up nicely for this stone-cold closer for low-profile trainer Herbert Miller. Top-tier rider Luis Saez picks up the mount, who drops in class after firing a bullet four-furlong work on April 1. Wager: Win & Exacta box on 7 with the 2, 5, & 13 (if the latter draws in from also-eligible list).”
                                                              Gulfstream Race No. 9 (5:07 p.m. ET/2:07 p.m. PT)
Dave Tuley likes #7 Blewitt (20/1 morning line) and #6 Stone Hands (15/1) to a lesser extent. Blewitt blew it in his two most recent races as he lost both by 14 lengths, but he has a lot of back class and I give him a chance to upset this field. He showed speed two races back before fading, but a look at his past performances shows plenty of times he’s carried that speed the distance as he’s a respectable 3-for-9 in his career and has usually gone off as the favorite. I suspect we won’t get the 20/1 from the morning line (especially with Todd Pletcher as the trainer and Tyler Gaffalione as the jockey), but I think anything in double digits is a value play as he should be right on the lead and those early-running types have done well in dirt route races this year at Gulfstream. That’s also why I’m going to use #6 Stone Hands as he should also be out front early as he’s coming out of sprint races. Stone Hands has never raced this far before, so that’s why I’m not putting him on top, but I’ll also take a flier on him if he goes off at 15/1 or higher and use both in exotics (with each other as well as others).
