    EP36's Pickin' Penguin OVERdose
Howdy pucksters. Been watching the first handful of games for each team to get a bit of a grip on the teams. Feel like it's time to dive into it with a daily thread for tracking porpoises. I find myself gravitating to OVERs when I place wagers, so I decided to try something new for 2010-2011. Find one game per day that I think is the best shot at an OVER. Occasionally on slow days, might throw in a Salami wager, but otherwise it is an OVER a day to keep the bookies at-bay.

Anything you want to add or make fun of ... do it, do it. All picks are brought to you courtesy of the Pickin' Penguin.

    10.20.10: VANCOUVER@CHICAGO OVER 5.5 [-115]
Canucks have been brutal defensively on the road so far this season with 14 goals allowed in three games. That includes last night's six goal letdown against Minnesota. Chicago has let in at least two goals in all seven of their games and three or more in five of those seven. Offensively, the Blackhawks have tallied at least three goals in five of seven. Power plays for both have been lethal with Chicago ranked 3rd so far with 3.29 goals per game via the PP. Vancouver is 7th. Vancouver is in the bottom third in terms of PK percentage, so special teams could be big in producing goals tonight. Seven of the last eight meetings have hit for at least six goals.

              UPDATED RECORD: 0-1 [-1.15]

Must have been the board jinx tonight. One goal in two periods, chalking it up in the L column and hoping the Penguin works some magic tomorrow.

                10.21.10: ISLANDERS@LIGHTNING OVER 5.5 [-125]
There's been a lot of attention paid to Tampa's early goal scoring prowess with 17 goals in five games despite being shut out once. What attracts me more to this pick is their poor defense/goal tending. They have allowed 18 goals this season with ten coming in their last two games. The Isles haven been Jekyll & Hyde with their own offense, scoring 15 goals in three home games and just five goals in three road games. Both power play units have been pretty good so far, but Tampa's has been exceptional and rates second with a 33% conversion rate thus far. If they can get on the job tonight enough times, they should score plenty and the Isles will have to keep pace.

                    10.25.10: KINGS@WILD OVER 5.5 [+110]
Hoping to get off the schnide today. Kings have given up at least three goals in three straight with all three going OVER. Offensively, they have been "on" in their last five with at least three goals in four of their last five. Minnesota has been credited with giving up at least two goals in all seven of their games this season. Offensively, they have been much better at home with 15 goals in four games compared to six in three road games. Let's see if the Wild can continue their ridiculous PP numbers at home, so far they have cashed 8 of 14 opportunities at home, but face a good L.A. PK unit.

'Nucks have ten goals at home in their last two. 'Lanche have given up ten in their last two overall. Symmetry? Budaj likely in goal for Colorado. He gave up four in his only start this season. Jihad Penguin makes a cameo appearance to try and blowup the winless streak. Doobie doobie BOOM!

                              10.27.10: THRASHERS@RANGERS OVER 5.5 [-115]
Rangers have not fallen apart without Drury and Gaborik like many expected. They may not be torching opponents, but they are finding the back of the net with eight goals in three games without both starters. Thrashers are leaking goals with 19 surrendered in their last five overall. Four of five Atlanta road tilts have hit OVERs. If ATL can get on the job tonight, their PP unit can take advantage of NY's and help the cause.

                                  10.28.10: OILERS@BLUE JACKETS OVER 5.5 [-120]
Edmonton has been leaking goals lately with the opposition scoring at least four goals in five straight games. While Columbus is not a goal scoring machine, they have been consistent in putting up 2-3 goals in all eight of their games. Going against the leaky Edmonton PK unit [dead last in the NHL] could help get the Jackets PP out of neutral. Edmonton has hit for OVERs in five straight and all three road games in 2010. Columbus has just two OVERs this year, but both have come at home. Dubnyk is supposed to get the start for Khabibulin tonight. Dubnyk gave up four goals in a 5-3 loss to Columbus in March. Seven of his eight road starts last season hit OVER. Mason goes for Columbus. He's been much worse at home with 15 goals given up in four starts compared to four in two road starts.

                                      10.29.10: GRAND SALAMI OVER 34.5 [-110]
First stab at the Salami tonight. Six games on the docket and I think you can make a case for the OVER in just about everyone of them. Little break down to my thinking here:

MON-NYI: Isles over in all three home games. Habs finding the net regularly in their last five. Auld likely to start.

CAR-NYR: Hurricanes hit OVERs in 5 of 6 on the road. Rangers pretty decent scoring lately.

PHI-PIT: This is the wildcard for me. Pens have been pretty bankable scoring, but the Flyers have not, especially on the road. They did score six in their last game though.

BUF-ATL: 7 of 9 for Atlanta have hit at least six goals. Four of five OVERs for Buffalo of late.

EDM-CHI: Hawks homes games are 6 of 7 UNDERs, Oilers are 3 of 4 road OVERs.

NJ-ANA: Two of the three worst goals against averages going against each other.

My 2cents: warning may be worthless

Mon-NYI: I'm liking the over; if not just for the fact they hit the over easily a few days ago.

Car-NYR: I'm definitly staying away from this over. Car ranks 27th in goals/game and the high scoring antics by these "2nd tier" forwards for the rangers won't last in my opinion. Car on the road again; (tired for sure) will play their typical defensive game.

PHI-PITT: Lots of offensive power in this game. bobvrosky @ 3.03GAA and Fleury with a 3.41GAA; how can you not like the over.

BUFF-ATL: Both team over 3 goal against/game. I just don't see buffalo staying on that course but recent history does trend towards another over.

EDM-CHI: 2.64 goals gainst/game for chicago and edmonton on the back end of a back to back. Add the fact chicago's only scoring 2.82/game and no Hossa tonight I see NO lean on the over.

NJ-ANA: I agree! When you allow almost 40 SOG against/game like the ducks do; and the way NJ has been playing of late.... goals will come fast and furious.

                                        ~cheers

The Stars will look to reginite an offense that racked up 24 goals in the first six games, but has just four in their past three overall. If they can get on the job tonight, they could start there as Buffalo has let in seven PP goals in their last four. Both teams have given up ten goals in their last two games.

Colorado has hit for at least three goals in eight of their eleven games so far this season. They have failed to meet this total in just one of their four games at home. Looks like they get Schneider in goal for VAN tonight who has been tough in two starts this season, but neither was on the road.

ATL on the road is an auto play for me on the OVER until they prove otherwise. Seven of eight road tilts have hit OVERs. OVERs hit eight of their last ten overall. Ottawa has been consistent scoring three or more goals in five of six overall. They have yet to record a shutout. Mason goes for ATL with at least three goals allowed in eight of his ten starts. Elliott for OTT. Gettin' PIMPed for this one.

Florida has found offense at home that they have not always found on the road thus far in 2010. In five home games, the Panthers have 21 goals compared to 15 in seven road games. As a result, they have seen OVERs in four of five on home ice. Toronto has not been scoring well on the road, but they have been giving it up nicely with at least three goals allowed in five of six on the road. Four of those six have gone OVERs. Looks like Gustavsson for TOR. He has allowed nine goals in three road starts. Vokoun for FLA. He's started all Panther home games this year with 13 goals allowed in his last four starts at home, including two quickies against Carolina last time out that chased him in the 1st period. The REAPER Penguin comes out tonight to REAP some cash.

The Oil are coming off a season worst effort defensively as they gave up seven goals to Carolina in their last tilt. They have now given up at least three goals in ten of their 13 games this season. On the road, OVERs have hit in five of seven. Khabibulin in net for EDM with four or more goals allowed in seven of his 12 starts. He gave up four in just eight shots vs. Carolina. Jimmy Howard for DET. He's been solid, but has given up at least two goals in four of his five home starts. Red Wings have hit OVERs in five of seven at home. Detroit is scoring close to four goals per home game, while Edmonton gives up nearly four per road game. Wings should definitely look to pick apart a poor EDM PK unit if they can. EDM gave up three PP goals in their last game.

Coincidentally, their only other back-2-back came early in the year with Detroit also being the second night. They won that won 5-4 in a shootout. On the road, Colorado has been leakier on defense. Despite last night's solid performance, the Avalanche have given up at least three goals in five of their other seven road tilts. Detroit is averaging over four goals per home game. They have hit for at least four goals in four of their last six at home and have hit for OVERs in six of eight at home this season. Budaj will get the back-2-back start while Howard goes for Detroit. That's a rematch of the match-up from earlier this season. Both gave up four goals in that one.
