Dog Day
Posted by Todd on Feb 23, 2015 in Industry News
Last night’s UFC event on Fox Sports 1 created a betting phenomenon not often see in the pugilistic arts these days; a card filled with live underdogs. Normally this spells disaster for UFC bettors accustomed to identifying a few favorites worth parlaying for what they deem to be a +EV investment. However last night one bettor at Bet Online took a very different approach to getting an action fix instead of watching the Oscars; he elected to parlay 8 underdogs while risking $2. Typically a bet of this nature keeps you engaged through one fight, maybe 2, but rarely will it leave you glued to the edge of your seat until the bitter end.
Little did anyone know at the time such a small investment would yield a rather large pay day. When the dust settled on UFC Fight Night 61 in Porto Alegro, Brazil the bettor who shall remain nameless turned his small wager into a $64,616.08 pay day. At least he was smart and hedged a bit of his potential windfall going into the Frank Mir match to close out the evening.
For those reading this story they know my feelings (along with those of other long time bettors) that parlays are a long term losing proposition. Every now and again we’ll hComment -

#424^^^64 grand from 2 bucks.. WOW!!!For $5 that would have paid $150,000...
That's a score and hit if I ever saw one Thor!!! Hope this lucky guy gets paid from the bookie... That's an adventure in itself when you hit like that online..
I'm still kicking myself today for not trying a small parlay once I got the vibe it was gonna be a dog night.. Errrrr. Even a 5 teamer on the last leg for 5 bucks would have paid big... Not complaining though...
I'm a believer in streaks/trends and those types of parlays.... Gotta stick with it and not give up.. It's the cost of a pizza tip or a lotto ticket when you think about it..Last edited by JIBBBY; 02-23-15, 07:59 PM.Comment -

#425wow espn front page "UFC costs sportsbook nearly $1M"
When all was tallied up, Bovada.LV lost nearly $1 million on UFC Fight Night 61 when 10 of 11 underdogs won.
Frank Mir's victory over Antonio Silva in the main event in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on Sunday night marked the 10th win by an underdog, costing Bovada nearly $1 million, according to the sportsbook's manager.
Underdogs went 10-1, and as a result, parlay bets, in which gamblers bet between $1 and $5 on all underdogs, hit big.
According to Bovada sportsbook manager Kevin Bradley, one bettor had a $4 all-underdog parlay that paid $85,000. Another had four $1 parlays that paid $25,000 each.
"We had at least a dozen of these bets that paid out $10,000 or more," Bradley said.
When all was tallied up, Bradley said the loss approached nearly $1 million on the single event.Comment -

#428in addition to the Johnson, Alvey, Martins i originally posted here (and then re-posted last night b4 the Mir fight)
which had just 4 legs = 1 triple + 3-doubles...(this little ditty hitting accounted for 17.3x units)
the morning of the event i decided to add Frank to the mix (after deciding to add him SU, it only seemed right, in the interest of symmetry)...expanding my 7-leg matrix up to 11-legs
=1 quadruple + 4 triples + 6 doubles...
(each leg was just 0.25u...making 2.75u in all)...
when the dust settled my bankroll had a bit more than doubled...meaning that beefing up this little matrix of parlays by one fighter, from 3 to 4 dogs, magnified the haul by a factor of 6...meaning that instead of 17u, a bit more than 100units were netted on the 2.75u risked...
______________
the REALLY funny thing is that later in the day, i decided to follow Sider on his Marion Reneau enthusiasm...and i waffled baknforth the rest of the day, till the card started on whether to scratch my urge to complete the symmetry having all my SU-dogs locked into this fun little round-robin project...
if i did add Reneau to the round-robin mix it would bring my 4-fighter/11-legger to a 5-fighter/26-legger
(which would have taken my little 1u ticket, which i'd already bumped up to 2.75...and would have blasted it all the way up to 6.5u...no longer a cute little lottery ticket...so i said fukk the symmetry, and left Marion unattached, lol)
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossar..._UK_bookmakers
section 5 deals with these sorts of enhanced round-robins...i've done them a number of times in MLB, and most of the time they're just donations to the book...remembering that, and the intention of my original little 3-fighter/4-leg flier...i left things as they were...
IF i had decided differently on that...my account would have MUCH more than doubled...on the other hand, Murphy's Law being the way it is...IF i had escalated it up to a 6.5unit-baby...dogs mighta' done sweet fraak all
