Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson Prediction, Picks & Odds: Back the Champ

Robertson's wrestling presents a legitimate threat, but Dern has already shown she can win through difficult grappling exchanges.

Here's our Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson prediction and UFC 330 betting preview: Dern makes her first strawweight title defense against Robertson today at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Dern and Robertson both made championship weight at 115 pounds Friday, and their co-main event airs on Paramount+ as part of the 9 p.m. ET main card.

I'm backing Dern as a -205 betting favorite, with the fight going the distance at -140 as my favorite play. Robertson has built her five-fight winning streak around takedowns and long stretches of top control, but that puts her in the strongest area of Dern's game. Dern also showed against Virna Jandiroba that she can lose the takedown battle and still win rounds with striking and damage.

💰 Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson best bet: Fight goes the distance (-140)

Robertson has plenty of finishing credentials, including a UFC women's record seven submission wins, but opponents have had a hard time putting her away. Six of her eight career losses came by decision. Her last stoppage loss came against Maycee Barber in October 2019, and every defeat since has reached the scorecards.

Dern brings similar durability into this matchup. She has never lost by submission, and Jessica Andrade owns the only knockout victory over her in 21 professional fights. Dern just spent 25 minutes grappling with Jandiroba, who landed nine takedowns, and still won the title by unanimous decision. Robertson controlled Amanda Lemos for most of the final two rounds in March without finding a finish. Two dangerous grapplers can create plenty of submission threats without producing an actual submission, and I'm betting 1.5 units on all five rounds at -140.

Dern's title win offers a useful blueprint for this matchup. Jandiroba took her down nine times compared to only two takedowns for Dern, yet Dern landed 118 significant strikes to Jandiroba's 106 and won all three scorecards. Her jab and leg kicks gave her the advantage standing, while her jiu-jitsu kept Jandiroba from turning top position into enough offense to steal the fight.

Robertson should have opportunities to wrestle. She averages 2.76 takedowns per 15 minutes, while Dern's career takedown defense sits at 37%. Robertson has also accumulated 1:34:00 of UFC top-position time, one of the highest totals in company history. Against Lemos, she used one takedown in each of the final two rounds to control 4:06 in Round 2 and another 3:33 in Round 3.

Dern has more ways to score when those takedowns stall out. She lands 3.47 significant strikes per minute compared to Robertson's 2.71, and her guard gives Robertson very little margin for error on the mat. I expect Robertson to bank some control time, but Dern can do more damage between those exchanges and threaten from underneath when the challenger does get on top. That should leave Dern with enough rounds to retain her belt.

Prediction: Dern to win (-205 via DraftKings)

💡 How I'm handicapping Dern vs. Robertson

Robertson's wrestling keeps me from treating Dern's moneyline as an easy favorite bet. Dern only stops 37% of opposing takedowns, and Robertson has built her current run by forcing opponents to work from underneath her. She has won five straight and six of seven since returning to strawweight.

The Jandiroba fight moves me toward Dern. She gave up nine takedowns and still won because those takedowns produced limited offense. Dern scored more effectively on the feet and remained dangerous enough from her back to keep the fight competitive. Robertson's strongest path asks her to spend significant time grappling with one of the best submission artists in women's MMA.

I'm putting two units on Dern at -205, then taking a smaller shot on her decision prop at +150. The distance bet gives me some protection against Robertson having more wrestling success than expected. Neither woman needs to dominate for that ticket to cash, and their durability makes -140 a price I'm comfortable laying.
