⚽ Austria vs. Argentina Prediction: World Cup Picks & Best Bets (June 22)
Last Updated: June 22, 2026 7:39 AM EDT • 3 minute read X Social Google News Link
I don't think anyone will be wondering whether anything remains in Lionel Messi's tank as he and Argentina prepare to take on Austria at AT&T Stadium in Dallas on Monday (1 p.m. ET, FOX Sports).
The maestro scored a hat trick in the opener against Algeria to tie Miroslav Klose for the most World Cup goals (16), and I'm backing him to add to that tally in my Austria vs. Argentina prediction. Argentina is the -195 betting favorite, and I expect them to pick up all three points against an Austria team that won their first match 3-1 against Jordan.

⚽ Who will win Austria vs. Argentina?
In what should be a tight match, I have Argentina beating Austria 2-0 or 2-1. Argentina is starting to round into form, winning eight in a row entering the match. Austria, meanwhile, struggled for large portions of their opener against Jordan, requiring an own goal from Jordan and a late penalty in a 3-1 score that flattered them.
Score prediction: Argentina 2, Austria 0
💵 My best bet: Argentina ML and Under 4.5 goals
Argentina won eight matches in a row, keeping a clean sheet seven times. Austria, meanwhile, has struggled to score recently, netting 13 in the previous seven games. Five of those goals came in a 5-1 rout of Ghana.
Austria managed three goals against Jordan in the opener, but that total flattered Ralf Rangnick's team, which underperformed for most of the match. Messi was at his otherworldly best against Algeria, and he needs only one moment to make Austria pay.

Lionel Messi, F, (+100)
Messi to score represents the best bet for this match as the diminutive magician has scored at least once in five straight World Cup matches, bagging eight in that sample size.
He netted his first World Cup hat trick against Jordan in the opener, and Messi is tied with Klose for the most World Cup goals (16). The ageless wonder has 11 goals in his previous 10 World Cup matches.
With the form he's in, it will only take a half chance to score. And remember, he takes the team's penalties, too. For what it's worth, I'm not the only one around here on this play, as Phil Wood gives it as one of his best Lionel Messi player props today.
Best Austria vs. Argentina goal-scorer pick: Lionel Messi (+100 via FanDuel)
🥅 Will both teams score in Austria vs. Argentina?
Based on what I saw when they played Jordan, I can't trust Austria to score against a much more resolute and organized defensive team. Argentina has kept a clean sheet in seven of the previous eight matches, and Austria, with the exception of Marko Arnautovic and Michael Gregoritsch, lacks offensive bite.
Both teams to score (BTTS) pick: No (-135 via BetMGM)
