The holders enter the knockout rounds by facing a shocking debutant, and my Argentina vs. Cape Verde prediction looks to find the best values on the board in a game that has the widest gulf in the odds on the day.

The action from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., gets started at 6 p.m. ET (FOX, Telemundo, FOX One). My World Cup best picks find value in a game where traders at prediction market apps have driven Argentina to 92% in the "to advance" markets.

The graph sort of sums this one up. On one hand, you have the reigning world champions, Argentina, currently the #2 ranked team in the world. On the other hand, you have Cape Verde, a team making its first appearance in the World Cup, who did indeed have a great Group Stage, picking up three draws, which is probably three more than anyone expected them to get.

You can't play this market (at 93 cents on the "Argentina to advance" profits just 75 cents on a $10 wager), but it's correct. Today is the end of the road for Cape Verde who will be comfortably dispatched by an Argentina side that will control possession and game flow from the opening whistle.

Score prediction: Argentina 3, Cape Verde 0

💵 My best pick: Yes - Argentina -2.5 (42 cents)

Argentina is one of the world's most complete teams. The midfield (Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, and company) controls the tempo underneath as fullbacks push high to create a 3-2-5 in possession, opening up room for Lionel Messi to operate.

They're an elite pressing team that gives opponents very little time or space and will eventually break down the Cape Verde low block. Once Cape Verde is opened up and has to play for its future in the tournament, it's open season.

Lionel Messi, F, Argentina to score 2+ (35%)

Much like the "to advance" and moneyline markets, Messi to simply score has been run up by traders as well, sitting at 68 cents. That implies American odds in the ~-210 range, which is a little steep for a single goal.

Let's instead get greedy and look for him to score twice. He's already netted six times in the tournament, with a brace and a hattrick in his two starts and a single in 30 minutes of action in the Group Stage finale; that's why he's heading the way in the Golden Boot market.

Argentina will just have such sustained pressure for the entire game, and Messi will be the first (and second) choice to exploit opportunities when they arise, even if the game slows in tempo after they open the scoring.

It's a play that Phil Wood is backing in his best Lionel Messi player props, too.

Best Argentina vs. Cape Verde goal-scorer pick: Messi to score 2+ (35%)

💰️ World Cup parlay

I feature a play from this game in my World Cup parlay today too. It's not easy to find great angles on what should be a blowout, but I've highlighted one I think brings good value.

🥅 Will both teams score in Argentina vs. Cape Verde?

It's going to be a long afternoon for Cape Verde. Their disciplined defensive approach that got them to this point (and is their only hope of keeping this close, even if it fails) has them sitting keep for most of the match.

The problem is, with Argentina's incredibly difficult press after losing possession, time on the ball will be limited. Argentina allowed just three shots on goal across all three of their group games combined (one in each), giving up just one goal along the way. They also allowed just two big chances in those games.

Cape Verde won't get off the mark today.

Both teams to score (BTTS) pick: No (68 cents)
