NHL Predictions Today: Odds, Picks & Best Bets for Wednesday, Oct. 14

With only two games on tap, pickings are somewhat slim for my NHL predictions today. While it’s a quiet slate, I’m confident about the three bets I selected.
Two members of the Colorado Avalanche (Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas) and Washington Capitals forward Dylan Strome headline today’s picks.

NHL best bet today
Dylan Strome Over 0.5 assists (+124 via FanDuel)
Strome is one of my go-to player props for assists, as he is one of the most consistent and reliable setup men. He has five helpers in six games, notching at least one on four occasions.
His ice time has also increased over the last two games, returning to the 18 or 19 minutes he’s used to. Strome tallied an assist in two of three home games this season, and he usually feasts against the Montreal Canadiens, with nine assists in the previous six meetings.
📡 SBR Edge: Strome’s dominance against the Canadiens
Strome not only racks up helpers against the Habs, but he’s also on a six-game assist streak against them entering Wednesday’s contest. Dating back a bit further, he has 12 assists in the last 10 contests against the Canadiens.

Martin Necas anytime goal (+175 via FanDuel)
Necas has four goals in six games and scored two against the Dallas Stars last night. While four goals is an impressive haul, Necas has scored in only two games.
However, the 27-year-old saves his best for the Stars. He’s scored six goals in the previous seven meetings against Dallas, including five in the last five. And the triumvirate of Necas, MacKinnon, and Artturi Lehkonen had a ridiculous 79.1% expected-goals share in Tuesday’s 3-2 win.
As these teams met last night, Jake Oettinger may get the night off. Necas has a goal in two games against backup Casey DeSmith since arriving in Colorado.
Nathan MacKinnon Over 0.5 assists (-150 via FanDuel)
I’m closing today’s predictions with a bit of a softball. I rarely find MacKinnon’s single-assist prop at -150, so I’m taking advantage of it. I’d still happily take his Over 1.5-point prop, as MacKinnon has notched at least two points in four of five contests.
He has at least two assists in three of five games and leads the team with seven helpers. He’s also clutch against the Stars, with at least one assist in his last five meetings. In that sample size, he has accumulated seven apples.
