While Sam Darnold is on pace to return to the lineup, I’m backing the reigning Super Bowl champions regardless of who is under center in my Seahawks vs. Commanders prediction.

The Seahawks are the 7.5-point betting favorite on the road at Northwestern Stadium (Delaware, Md.) against the Jayden Daniels-less Commanders. Here’s why I believe the Seahawks will return home with a 3-0 win after a convincing victory. You can catch the game on FOX.

The Commanders defense didn’t perform well in the first two weeks, albeit against two offenses (Dallas and Philadelphia) ranked among the top 11 in offensive DVOA. They have the third-worst defensive DVOA, and their task won’t get any easier against a Seahawks team with the 10th-best offensive EPA per play.

Darnold is expected to return, but Mike Macdonald won’t lose any sleep if Drew Lock, who has the second-best passer rating, is under center.

Sure, Darnold is a shoo-in to return if he’s healthy, but Macdonald must have thought, at least for a split second, about sticking with Lock until he’s no longer a lock

The Seahawks are 9-1 ATS on the road since the start of last season, which includes last week’s comfortable 31-7 win in Arizona.

Marcus Mariota under center for the Commanders

The Commanders offense will have to rely on Marcus Mariota. While Mariota’s a proficient backup, he went 3-6 ATS last season, and he doesn’t offer the same dynamism or dual threat that the injured Daniels does.

And he’s up against a stonewall of a defense with the second-fewest points allowed per game and the second-best defensive DVOA.
