After a disappointing 86-75 loss to Penn State to end the regular season, the Badgers have won three games in three days to earn their place in the Big Ten final. At 26-8, the Badgers have some frustrating performances this season, but they have figured it out when it matters most. Leading scorer John Tonje is playing on another level right now. He scored 32 points yesterday after scoring 26 in the quarterfinal round.

While the Spartans have been impressive in their two games in the Big Ten tournament, I believe their performance is more of a fluke than what we’ve seen from the Badgers. Yes, they’ve defeated two ranked opponents, and they blew out the Purdue Boilermakers, but they needed a last-second layup to beat Maryland yesterday, and they ended the regular season on a three-game losing streak.

Though the Wolverines beat the Badgers earlier this season, we’ve seen teams struggle to beat teams twice once they get into postseason play. Both Purdue and Maryland beat Michigan in the regular season before losing in the tournament, and the Badgers were 1-2 in the regular season against the teams they’ve beaten in the last three days. I can’t bet against the Badgers right now, as their offense is firing on all cylinders.

Every year there is one player who hits their conference tournament and goes on a magical run. This year, that player is Tonje. He’s scored 76 points in three games, and he just dropped 32 against one of the best teams in the country. Against UCLA in the quarterfinals, he was 9-of-10 from the floor and 6-of-6 from deep. While he shot worse against Michigan State, he still shot better than 50% from the field and he was 4-of-10 from long range.

What’s working against Tonje today? He averaged 19.5 points per game this season, scored just 18 against Michigan in his first meeting with the team, and he’s playing his fourth game in as many days. But the Wolverines are allowing 71.8 points per game, they just allowed 80 to Marlyand, and Tonje showed no signs of fatigue yesterday.

Despite how well both of these offenses have been playing, I like this game to go well below the posted total of 149.5. Even if Tonje is immune to tired legs, I expect both teams to struggle a bit from the floor, especially late, as they play on their third and fourth days in a row. 

While the Badgers’ offense has been the story of this tournament, their defense has been very impressive. They held the Spartans to just 74 yesterday, and they gave up just 70 to UCLA in a game when the defense dominated. Michigan has scored at least 81 ion both tournament games, but the Wolverines ended the regular season scoring 65 or less in two consecutive games.
