We promise this isn't the Onion.

Eight-time defending champion and world record holder Joey Chestnut has been banned from the 2024 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at Nathan's Famous on Coney Island on July 4, 2024.

According to Steve Cuozzo of the New York Post, Chestnut is out of the competition with which he's synonymous after making a deal with plant-based wiener brand, Impossible Foods. The 16-time Nathan's champion had been previously offered a four-year, $1.2-million contract to appear in the Independence Day contest, but his decision to represent the vegan brand has that in jeopardy.

Chestnut was a resounding betting favorite by the early odds for the 20245 hot dog eating contest. His inability to participate would blow the doors wide open for what had become a diminished field competing for second place every year.

YesNo
-2000+700 (Field)

The Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest odds are presented as a simple two-way market roughly a month out from the 2024 event, with -2000 odds for Chestnut to win, and +700 odds he doesn't.

How many hot dogs will Chestnut eat?

Over 68.5Under 68.5
-110-130

Chestnut fell well short of this betting line for the second straight year last July. After eating 63 hot dogs in 10 minutes during the 2022 contest, he consumed 62 in 2023.

The first six victories to begin his current run of eight straight titles all ended with him eating 70-plus hot dogs. His record of 76 hot dogs and buns (HDB) in 2021 still stands entering the 2024 contest.

These odds imply a 56.52% probability he finishes with 68 or fewer HDB this summer.
