New York Yankees vs. New York Mets
Friday, September 10, 2021 - 07:10 PM EDT at Citi Field
The Yankees and Mets will play in what promises to be a more emotional than usual Subway Series over the weekend when the city of New York will commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Saturday’s game promises to be a powerful look back, including a pregame ceremony focusing on the impact of the attacks on the city and the teams’ return to the field 20 years ago.

The series starts the night before, however, and both the Yankees and Mets will enter the three-weekend games with their eyes focused squarely on the field. The Yankees are in desperate need of a win after losing six straight and watching their grip on the Wild Card shrink to a half-game. The Mets are just as desperate, on the outside of the playoff picture looking in and coming off of back-to-back series losses to the Nationals and Marlins.
“Time to Roll”
Since their 13-game winning streak, the Yankees have gone 2-10, including a 1-6 homestand that ended with a brutal four-game sweep at the hands of the visiting Blue Jays. Toronto won the four games by a combined 25-8 score, and the Yankees never led in the 36 innings the two teams played. That’s the first time that’s happened to New York in a four-game home series since 1908 and the first time it’s happened to the Yankees in a four-game series anywhere since 1924.

"We just had a horrible homestand,'' manager Aaron Boone said. "It's not OK.” The team is looking past the losses, however. After seeing how quickly they went from a winning streak to this slump, they know they can turn things positive just as quickly. “Time to roll,” Aaron Judge said. “We know what we’re capable of.” The Yankees will start lefthander Jordan Montgomery, who is 5-5, 3.47 on the year. He’s made it past five innings just once in his last six starts.
Looking for Another Subway Spark
This year’s first installment of the Subway Series helped snap the Mets out of another slump earlier in the season. When the Yankees and Mets played in the first week of July, the Mets had lost five of seven. They took two of three in Yankee Stadium, however, and were able to defend their lead in the National League East.

This time, the lead is a distant memory, and the Mets enter the series in third place in the East, five games out of first. They’re also five out of the Wild Card, with four teams to pass in order to get into playoff position. The Mets were hoping the just-completed soft spot in their schedule would help get them back into postseason contention.
New York played the last two weeks against the Marlins and Nationals. Things started well, including a six-game win streak that cut the deficit in the division from eight games to three and a half. The Mets lost two of their last three in Washington, however, then lost two of three in Miami and come in frustrated with an 8-5 mark over the softest spot of their schedule.
The Mets have also lost in the most frustrating ways possible, including a 1-11 mark in their last 12 games decided by one run. The Mets will start the series with Tylor Megill on the mound. He’s 2-4, 4.20 in his rookie season but has lost two of his last three starts, allowing 13 earned runs in 14.2 innings over that span.

The Pick
The Yankees have been declared dead countless times this season and always seem to find a way to surge back into the picture. Part of that is the sheer amount of talent on the roster. For your MLB picks, look for the Yankees to find their batting stroke again and get a solid start from Montgomery and begin the road back in the AL East.
